The floor ceremony was ceremonial, not the moment Kamala Harris first became the official Democratic nominee; that had happened in an online vote earlier in August.
What the 2024 DNC roll call playlist was
The convention’s roll call took place at Chicago’s United Center. The Democratic National Committee said all 57 delegations celebrated to a song selected to represent the character of their state. WTTW reported that DJ Cassidy curated the walk-up songs. The list went beyond the 50 states to include the District of Columbia, U.S. territories and Democrats Abroad.
As PBS NewsHour’s description notes, the floor vote repeated an earlier online event that had already made Harris the official nominee. Minnesota and California voted last during the convention roll call.
Every state and delegation’s song
This table follows WTTW’s August 20, 2024 list, including its spellings and artist attributions. Some entries include more than one track.

How to read the song choices
The DNC’s stated idea was to choose a song that represented a delegation’s character. Some connections are readily legible: “Sweet Home Alabama” names Alabama, and “Empire State of Mind” evokes New York. Others draw on an artist’s regional association or work as a broad, high-energy entrance song. Those are ways to interpret the examples, not an official explanation of each pick; the available reporting does not document the reasoning behind every selection.

WTTW lists California with “California Love” and Kendrick Lamar’s “They Not Like Us.” Contemporary coverage also used the title “Not Like Us,” and WTTW’s entry may not capture every track reported elsewhere. The DNC’s event page confirms the 57-delegation roll call but does not provide the full song list. Treat the California entry here as WTTW’s transcription rather than a settled account of the complete set.
