Danny DeVito has made public political appeals and identified with a presidential candidate, but those statements are not the same as running a sustained campaign. Other Hollywood figures have taken different routes: Jane Fonda helped organize climate demonstrations and education, while Robert Redford worked with an environmental advocacy organization. Their examples show why it helps to distinguish electoral speech from issue-based organizing and institutional advocacy.
What DeVito’s public statements show
DeVito’s documented political comments in the sources cited here are tied to specific moments, rather than evidence of his current political activity. In a 2016 interview with The Guardian, he urged people to do all they could to stop Donald Trump from becoming president. The appeal belongs to the 2016 election context; it should not be recast as a current endorsement.

In a 2022 Vanity Fair interview, DeVito called himself a “Bernie bro” and connected his politics to a desire for justice. That self-description identifies an affinity with Bernie Sanders, but it is not a complete account of DeVito’s political views or a record of organizing work.
Jane Fonda: climate activism through demonstrations and education
In October 2019, Jane Fonda and Greenpeace USA launched Fire Drill Fridays, a campaign combining demonstrations, public education, and calls for climate action. The campaign describes its purpose as bringing together new and lifelong climate activists to share ways to work toward a cleaner, greener, more just world. Its format makes Fonda’s example different from an election endorsement: it centers on a public issue and organized activity.

Fire Drill Fridays says its virtual shows and teach-ins drew 12 million viewers; the campaign page does not state a year for that figure. It is a campaign-reported audience number, not an independently audited count of unique people and not evidence that the campaign produced a particular policy result. In a 2024 interview with TIME, Fonda described the difficulty of turning protests, arrests, and lobbying into legislation. That is her assessment of the challenge, not an independent measurement of the campaign’s effectiveness.
Robert Redford: environmental advocacy with an established organization
Redford’s advocacy included work with the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), including its Stop the Pebble Mine campaign. NRDC’s remembrance of Redford describes his relationship with the organization and that campaign. Because NRDC is recounting the work of its own former trustee, its account is best read as the organization’s description of his advocacy.

This example differs from both DeVito’s electoral comments and Fonda’s campaign organizing: it places an actor’s advocacy in the work of an established environmental organization. It does not, by itself, establish that Redford’s involvement caused a particular outcome.

- Electoral speech: DeVito’s 2016 appeal and 2022 self-description show public political expression and candidate affinity.
- Issue-based organizing: Fonda’s Fire Drill Fridays work involved demonstrations and climate education organized with Greenpeace USA.
- Institutional advocacy: Redford’s environmental work included a campaign associated with NRDC.
These are representative examples, not an exhaustive list of Hollywood activists or evidence that entertainers share one political outlook. A public statement, an organized campaign, and work alongside an advocacy group are all forms of engagement, but they differ in duration, structure, and what can be established about their effects. Attention or audience reach alone does not demonstrate policy impact.
