Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →In a September 23, 2022 appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show, Cynthia Erivo spoke about identifying as queer later in life. She recalled recognizing that something felt different before she had words for it, and said being able to be herself felt wonderful. She also described the creative energy she could reclaim after no longer concealing part of herself.
What Cynthia Erivo said about finding language for herself
The show’s verified video description framed the conversation as Erivo discussing identifying as queer later in life and not having language for what she felt when she was younger. In EDGE’s account of the interview, Erivo said, “I don’t think I had the language to even know what was going on.” She also recalled knowing something felt different without knowing what to call it: “What do I call it? What do I say about it?”
Her remarks describe a gap between sensing an experience and having words to understand or express it. The conversation does not establish a single moment when that changed, or the earliest occasion on which she spoke publicly about her sexuality.
Why she called being herself wonderful
Erivo told Clarkson, “It’s come much later to me now and it’s wonderful to just be me, really.” The show’s video description highlighted the sentiment as “It’s wonderful to just be me.”

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.

She connected that sense of freedom with her creative life. “I think it’s sort of made space creatively to just sort of let go of whatever I was hiding,” she said. Erivo added that energy spent concealing something “so a part of you that you can’t hide it” could instead be put elsewhere “and make more wonderful things.” In her account, coming out was not only about naming herself; it also changed where she could direct her attention and energy.
What this interview does—and does not—say about coming out
Erivo’s experience is her own, not a timetable for anyone else. Her account offers one example of recognizing a difference before having language for it, and of later finding that language meaningful. The interview’s description and EDGE’s report support those points; they do not establish when or where she first publicly discussed her sexuality.
