Srinivas Krishna’s Masala still feels distinct because it refuses to make immigrant life a simple culture-clash joke. The 1991 film places the pressures of being Indian in Canada inside a playful, mythic story, blending Indian film genres with Western conventions and moving between comedy, tragedy, irony and compassion. Its restored screening at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2024 offered a chance to revisit that unusual mix—not proof of where the film can be watched today.
What is Masala about?
Masala is a 105-minute, English-language Canadian feature written and directed by Srinivas Krishna. Set in Toronto’s East Indian community, it follows a young Krishna caught between expectations in the “New World” and obligations connected to his cultural background. His story runs alongside those of relatives played by Saeed Jaffrey, who takes on three major roles. The Toronto International Film Festival’s Canadian Film Encyclopedia describes the film as a mixture of East Indian film genres and Western conventions, with a tone that shifts between humour and tragedy, irony and compassion. TIFF’s Canadian Film Encyclopedia entry for Masala lists the film as a 1991 production shot in 35mm colour.
Why does its comedy still have force?
It treats identity as a lived reality, not a punchline
Krishna told Scroll in 2024 that “Masala is about the fact and reality of being Indian, particularly Hindu, in Canada.” He also resisted the familiar culture-clash label: “It isn’t a typical culture clash comedy.” The film draws its comic energy from a life shaped by overlapping expectations rather than from a tidy contest between two cultures. Krishna has said the work grew from his own experience of arriving in Canada as a child and growing up amid an early Indian immigrant community. He did not set out to make a conventionally representative account, so the film is best understood as a particular, self-fashioned perspective—not a claim to speak for every Indian Canadian.
Its tonal shifts are part of the design
Domestic comedy and arranged marriage sit alongside devotional imagery, fantasy songs, racism, love and the trauma of the Air India bombing. That collision can be exhilarating and uncomfortable: the film asks viewers to move between intimate family life, imaginative spectacle and real historical grief without smoothing the differences away. Krishna said he lost friends on the flight and reflected on how the bombing was publicly framed as an Indian tragedy despite many passengers being Canadian. He described the film as a cosmic play rather than a political position, and said, “I don’t judge who did the bombing or blame anybody.” That is Krishna’s account of his approach, not a claim that the event or its victims are treated lightly.

How does the film’s mythic structure shape its story?
Krishna has described the protagonist’s circular journey through the language of karma and the avatara, or divine incarnation. In the Scroll interview, he called it “a classical kind of story, an avatara story, which is as ancient as we get.” The framework helps explain why Masala does not move like a conventional realist immigrant drama: its characters and events can feel caught in cycles larger than any single domestic conflict. Krishna suggested that this structure may help the film continue to live on. That is his interpretation of its endurance, rather than a measurable claim about audience consensus.
What did the 2024 restoration bring into view?
Scroll reported on September 3, 2024 that a restored Masala was included among 23 restored Canadian classics screening at TIFF from September 6 to 15 that year. The revival placed the film before audiences as part of a broader celebration of Canadian cinema and renewed attention to its account of the Canadian-Indian diaspora experience. This is a dated festival event; it does not establish a current streaming service, rental option or physical-media release. Nandini Ramnath’s September 2024 Scroll interview with Krishna records his reflections on the film and its reception.

Why revisit Masala now?
The film offers more than an early portrait of immigrant life in Toronto. Its formal mixture—Indian cinematic conventions alongside Western storytelling, the ordinary beside the cosmic—keeps its subject from settling into a familiar lesson about assimilation or belonging. Krishna’s explanation of the story as mythic gives that mixture a logic, while his personal starting point marks its limits: Masala is one filmmaker’s account of identity, memory and community, not a universal template. The restored TIFF screening in 2024 made that distinctive combination newly visible to festival audiences; where the film is available now depends on current, region-specific listings.
