Crystals are a deliberate bridge between Magic: The Gathering—FINAL FANTASY and the wider game series. Wizards of the Coast vision designer Yoni Skolnik identified them as a recurring franchise motif, particularly in many early-era plots. The set’s official card list names five Crystal cards; that supports calling crystals a purposeful connective theme, not claiming they are equally central to every FINAL FANTASY game.

Why crystals matter to the crossover

The set had to bring together games with their own characters, settings, and signature elements while also making the collection feel like part of one franchise. Skolnik described that design goal in Wizards of the Coast’s vision design account, naming crystals as one of the recognizable elements shared across the series. He wrote: “One key example of that is the crystals, which were a staple of most of the games’ plots in the early era.”

The qualification matters: Skolnik said “most” early-era games, not every entry. The available sources do not provide a statistic measuring how often crystals appear across the full series, or a numerical comparison between crystal prominence and the games themselves. The headline’s comparison is best understood as an editorial description of crystals’ connective role in the set.

Which Crystal cards are in the set?

Wizards’ official card list, dated June 4, 2025, names five:

Those names identify the cards; they do not establish a ranking, a comparison of power, or how likely any card is to appear in a booster.

How the set represents a series-spanning franchise

Square Enix announced the set on May 12, 2025, describing it as bringing characters, items, and moments from all sixteen mainline FINAL FANTASY games into Magic. It gave June 13, 2025, as the launch date. In that broad crossover, a recurring image such as the crystals can help link material drawn from distinct games without making every card depend on one game’s story.

Magic: The Gathering Final Fantasy VI Commander Deck - Revival Trance

  • YOU CAN’T DESTROY EVERYTHING—Fill your graveyard and revive your fallen heroes as you fight alongside Terra, Herald of Hope to restore balance to the world.
  • 25 NEW CARDS plus ALL NEW ART—All 100 cards in this ready-to-play deck feature new FINAL FANTASY-themed art, including 25 Commander cards entirely new to Magic: The Gathering
  • 2 FOIL LEGENDARY CARDS—Each deck includes 2 Legendary Creature cards with a shiny Traditional Foil treatment that can be played as your commander
  • COLLECT SPECIAL ALT-BORDER CARDS—Each deck also comes with a 2-card Collector Booster Sample Pack containing 2 alternate-border cards of rarity Rare or higher

That balance also shaped the creative work. Wizards’ account of the set’s creative craft says the team pursued references specific to the franchise while aiming for designs that could resonate with people unfamiliar with an individual game’s lore. The crystals are therefore one recognizable motif within an adaptation, not a complete guide to the franchise’s mythology.

What the card list does—and does not—tell collectors

The official list confirms the five Crystal card names, but the cited materials do not establish current prices or the odds of opening one. A booster is not a guarantee of a Crystal card. Wizards’ collecting overview discusses product variants for the set, including a separate Traveling Chocobo treatment; those details do not establish Crystal-card pull rates.

  • COLLECT SPECIAL ALT-BORDER CARDS—Each deck also comes with a 2-card Collector Booster Sample Pack containing 2 alternate-border cards of rarity Rare or higher

The set’s collecting variants should not be confused with the Crystal cards themselves. For example, Wizards says borderless Traveling Chocobo cards in non-foil and traditional foil can appear in Play Boosters and Collector Boosters. Its serialized golden version is numbered 1 to 77 and appears only in English-language Collector Boosters; the non-serialized versions are mechanically identical. Those facts describe that card’s variants, not the availability or rarity of the five Crystals.

Why “as central as the video games” needs a narrow reading

The sources support a clear, limited conclusion: Wizards deliberately used crystals as a recurring motif to help connect a set spanning the mainline series. They do not show that crystals are equally prominent in every installment, quantify their importance against other franchise elements, or establish special retailer exclusivity for the Crystal cards. The word “Exclusive” in the original headline is not substantiated by the cited sources as a claim about where or in which products the cards can be found.
