That character work is the strongest reason to say the Prime Video series gets Cross right. The qualification is important: critics disagree about whether its thriller plot is compelling enough to match its lead.
Does Cross finally get Alex Cross right?
For viewers who want Alex Cross to feel like a person as well as a crime-solving machine, the answer is largely yes. Hodge’s performance gives the detective emotional weight, while his family life and bereavement are part of the character rather than brief pauses between investigations. TheWrap’s Ronda Racha Penrice argues that the series “finally gets it right,” particularly praising Hodge’s grounding presence and the show’s investment in Washington, D.C.
That is one critic’s verdict, not a consensus. TV Guide’s Liam Mathews also praises Hodge, but argues that the adaptation “doesn’t go far enough.” He finds the choices too safe and the central killer confusing rather than frightening. The difference points to the show’s central trade-off: its lead and setting can make Cross feel more fully realized even when the season’s mystery does not work equally well.
Where the character lands
Hodge portrays Cross as both a homicide detective and a forensic psychologist. The combination gives the show room to focus on how he reads people, but the more distinctive element is the tension between professional insight and personal vulnerability. His responsibilities as a father and the loss he carries give the casework consequences beyond solving the next crime.

Where the thriller may fall short
The case against the series is not that Hodge fails as Cross; both cited reviews recognize his strength. It is that characterization does not automatically make a mystery suspenseful. If a viewer’s main measure is a frightening, clearly developed antagonist and escalating procedural tension, TV Guide’s criticism is a meaningful counterpoint to TheWrap’s more favorable assessment.
Is the Prime Video show based on the books?
Cross draws on James Patterson’s characters, but its television stories are original rather than direct retellings of a particular Alex Cross novel. In a 2026 Los Angeles Times Q&A, showrunner Ben Watkins described the series as borrowing the characters while creating original stories in the writers’ room. That makes it a new screen interpretation, not a season-by-season adaptation of a named book.

The novels remain useful context for viewers interested in the character’s origins. Along Came a Spider, published in 1993, was the first Alex Cross novel. The Television Academy reported in 2024 that Patterson’s books had sold more than 300 million copies; that figure refers to the books, not the TV series’ audience.
The Television Academy lists three earlier film adaptations: Kiss the Girls (1997), Along Came a Spider (2001), and Alex Cross (2012). Hodge told ABC News that he did not use those films as a template. He said conversations with Watkins and Patterson helped him find his own connection to the character.

Why Washington and representation matter to the series
The show’s setting is more than a backdrop for investigations. TheWrap highlights its attention to life in Washington, while Watkins has described wanting law-enforcement and community tensions to emerge organically through characters with nuanced perspectives. That approach gives the series a chance to make Cross’s identity and relationships part of the world he works in, instead of treating them as incidental biographical details.
Watkins told ABC News, “audiences are fine touching on controversial subjects, they just don’t want to be preached to or lied to.” The line captures an ambition, not proof that every scene achieves it. TheWrap’s praise suggests the local grounding works for at least one reviewer; TV Guide’s reservations about the overall adaptation show that a more specific setting does not by itself solve problems with the thriller.

Should you watch Cross?
Watch it if you are interested in a character-led crime series, Hodge’s interpretation of Alex Cross, or a Washington setting that gives family and community context room in the story. If you mainly want a tightly engineered mystery or a consistently frightening antagonist, the mixed critical response is a reason to temper expectations. The show’s strongest case is its version of Cross; the effectiveness of the season’s crime story is more debatable.
How many seasons of Cross are streaming?
