Rotten Tomatoes shows a sharp split in its snapshot accessed October 8, 2026: The Electric State has a 14% Tomatometer from 159 reviews and a 67% Popcornmeter from 5,000+ ratings. That is a substantial difference on one platform—not proof that critics and audiences universally disagree, or an explanation of why they do.
What are The Electric State’s Rotten Tomatoes scores?
In the Rotten Tomatoes snapshot accessed October 8, 2026, the film’s Tomatometer is 14% from 159 professional critic reviews, while its Popcornmeter is 67% from 5,000+ audience ratings. The figures are platform summaries, not percentages of all critics or all people who watched the film, and they can change over time. Rotten Tomatoes’ listing displays both scores.
The platform’s critics consensus says the film has “plenty of hardware to back it up but none of the spark that’d make it come to life.” Its audience summary, by contrast, calls Chris Pratt’s comedic chops “delightfully sparky,” while also noting that the film may stray from its source and feel commercially driven. These are Rotten Tomatoes editorial summaries, not statements from a representative sample of individual viewers.
Why do critics hate it while the audience score is higher?
The scores establish a difference in reception; the available evidence does not establish its cause. The summaries point to contrasting emphases: the critics consensus stresses a lack of energy, while the audience summary highlights Pratt’s comedy. Reviews also show that critical reactions are not uniform. Some reviewers praised the visual effects or found the retro-futurist adventure breezily watchable; others objected to a rushed story, underdeveloped characters, or thin ideas. The Associated Press summed up its response as “big, ambitious and dull.”

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That contrast can help explain how a viewer might enjoy the film’s scale, robots, or comedy while still seeing weaknesses in its story. It does not show that those preferences account for the score gap. The sources do not establish audience demographics, how representative the ratings are, or whether ratings were manipulated. Nor do they demonstrate that fidelity to the book caused the difference.
Is The Electric State actually good?
There is no single answer hidden in the two percentages. If you value visual spectacle and a retro-futurist setting, the positive review responses cited by Metacritic suggest aspects you may enjoy. If you prioritize a tightly paced plot, well-developed characters, or fresh ideas, the reported criticisms may matter more. The film runs 128 minutes and is rated PG-13 for sci-fi violence/action, language, and some thematic material, according to the Associated Press.

A Rotten Tomatoes score can be a useful signal about the reception recorded on that site, but it cannot determine whether the movie will work for you. The split is a reason to look at the specific criticisms and praise rather than treating either score as a universal verdict.

Is The Electric State based on a book?
Yes. The film is adapted from Simon Stålenhag’s 2018 graphic novel of the same name. Netflix Tudum describes the movie as changing genre while retaining and expanding the story’s emotional themes. Stålenhag said the film changed the book’s genre “a bit,” while keeping and expanding its central core. That makes the graphic novel a useful point of comparison, but adaptation differences alone do not explain the Rotten Tomatoes gap.
For a more detailed look at the source, read the 2018 graphic novel, The Electric State, by Simon Stålenhag. Netflix identifies it as the film’s source; the adaptation’s reception does not tell you whether you will prefer the book.

What the score split can—and cannot—tell you
- It can: show that Rotten Tomatoes’ critic-review summary and audience-rating summary differ substantially in the snapshot reported here.
- It cannot: establish what all critics or viewers think, why the gap exists, or whether the ratings represent the wider viewing public.
- For a decision: consider the particular qualities raised in reviews—story and character development on one side, spectacle, retro-futurist style, and comedy on the other—rather than relying on an aggregate alone.
