Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö wrote ten Martin Beck police novels, published in Sweden from 1965 to 1975. The series made the police procedural a vehicle for examining contemporary Swedish society and became a major foundation for later Scandinavian crime fiction. Calling the pair the inventors of Nordic noir captures their influence, but overstates the case if taken literally: the genre has a broader history, and “Nordic noir” is a later label.
Who created the Martin Beck books?
Martin Beck is the Stockholm police commissioner at the center of a sustained sequence of crime novels by Swedish writers Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö. The books follow Beck and his colleagues across connected investigations; they are a continuing police-procedural series, not a set of unrelated mysteries.
The series is associated with the Swedish collective title Roman om ett brott, rendered variously as “A Novel of a Crime” or “The Story of a Crime.” Norstedts, the Swedish publisher, describes the novels as police stories with a social-critical edge. Its retrospective says: “Med romanserien flyttade den svenska kriminallitteraturen in i samtiden”—“With the series, Swedish crime literature moved into the contemporary moment.” That is the publisher’s characterization, not a quotation from either author. Norstedts’ retrospective also gives the series bibliography and publication years.

Did Sjöwall and Wahlöö invent Nordic noir?
They helped establish many elements readers now associate with Nordic noir: methodical police work, an unsentimental view of institutions and crimes framed within social conditions. The Norwegian scholarly encyclopedia Store norske leksikon calls the series a major work of Scandinavian crime literature and says it was important to the breakthrough of Nordic crime fiction. Norstedts likewise describes its stylistic influence.

That makes “invented Nordic noir” understandable as headline shorthand for foundational influence, not a settled claim that two writers single-handedly created a genre. “Nordic noir” is a later genre label, and the available accounts support a major breakthrough rather than an exclusive point of origin. Thomas McGonigle’s introduction excerpt for Scandinavian Noir characterizes the ten-book conception as a police procedural intended to portray Swedish society from a Marxist perspective; that is the introduction’s interpretation, not a neutral statement by the authors. See the Store norske leksikon entry on Sjöwall and Wahlöö and Macmillan’s Scandinavian Noir page.
Why the series remains a landmark
The achievement was not simply a recurring detective or a run of solved cases. Across ten novels, the police investigation provided a structure for observing contemporary society, while Beck and his colleagues gave the sequence continuity. Norstedts says the books addressed current issues and helped bring Swedish crime fiction into the contemporary moment. Store norske leksikon’s account places the series within a wider Scandinavian tradition while emphasizing its importance to the genre’s breakthrough.
