In the animated Creature Commandos, Nina Mazursky is an aquatic, half-human, half-fish woman whose appearance has led the human world to reject her. Among the other outsiders of Task Force M, she finds a rare sense of belonging—especially in her friendship with the Bride. That makes her final mission, and her death at Princess Ilana’s hands, all the more tragic.
Why does Nina Mazursky look like a fish?
Nina is an aquatic being who is half-human and half-fish. That description comes from Zoë Chao, the actor who voices her, in a DC interview published ahead of the finale. The animated series establishes this as part of who Nina is, but the interview does not explain a scientific cause or give a detailed account of how she came to have her aquatic traits.

Chao says Nina was rejected by the human world because people saw her as a freak. The series’ emotional focus is less on a medical explanation than on what that rejection has meant for Nina: she has struggled to find acceptance, then begins to feel more at ease among people who are outsiders themselves.
How does Nina find belonging with Task Force M?
Nina is part of Amanda Waller’s Task Force M, a team of incarcerated monsters recruited for dangerous missions. The official series page identifies the premise and cast of the 2024 animated adaptation.
Chao describes Nina as resilient and empathetic, and says she becomes more herself as she spends time with the team. In her words, “when she’s with the team she doesn’t feel like a freak anymore because they’re all freaks.” The bond is not simply that the team looks unusual; Nina is among people who understand what it means to be treated as an outsider.
Nina and the Bride
Nina’s friendship with the Bride grows from recognition rather than expectation. Chao describes Nina as seeing the Bride’s trauma and meeting her without the assumptions other people bring to her. Their connection gives Nina a personal relationship within the team, not just a place among fellow outcasts.
A DC editorial discussion of the series points to a small premiere moment that underscores Nina’s hunger for human connection: a child waves at her, and the gesture matters. It is a telling contrast with the rejection Nina has experienced elsewhere.
What happens to Nina in the finale?
In the season finale, Task Force M sends Nina to kill Princess Ilana while Ilana is swimming. Ilana notices Nina, takes Nina’s knife, and kills her with it. Maria Bakalova, who voices Ilana, confirms the sequence in a DC interview about the finale.

The mission sharpens the tragedy of Nina’s story: someone who has spent her life being treated as a freak is ordered to carry out the team’s lethal work, only to be killed by the target. Her death closes her chance to build on the belonging she had begun to find with the Bride and the others.
How is the comics Nina different?
DC’s comics character reference describes Dr. Nina “The Mermaid” Mazursky as an aquatically augmented doctor and lists Weird War Tales #93 as the Creature Commandos’ first appearance. That is useful comics context, but it is not a full account of her origin.
Rank #4
The animated series is a 2024 adaptation written and executive produced by James Gunn, with Chao among its cast, according to DC’s series page. The available official descriptions establish that both versions feature an aquatic Nina, but they do not establish that the comics and animated character share the same personal history. The show’s rejection-and-belonging story should not be treated as a definitive explanation of the comics Nina’s origin.

For broader team context, DC announced DC Horror Presents: Creature Commandos as an official comics release during its San Diego Comic-Con panel coverage. It is a team-focused point of entry, not a source established here as a retelling of the animated Nina backstory.
