Criminal Justice: Behind Closed Doors is a courtroom drama about Anu, a woman who has endured domestic abuse and is sent to prison after injuring her husband. In Nandini Ramnath’s 2020 review for Scroll.in, the series earns praise for its performances and production, but its slow, sometimes overextended storytelling blunts the force of its subject.
What is Criminal Justice: Behind Closed Doors about?
Anu (Kirti Kulhari) is married to Bikram (Jisshu Sengupta), an affluent and respected Mumbai lawyer. After years of abuse and gaslighting that she struggles to acknowledge, Anu drives a knife into Bikram’s abdomen and injures him. Her daughter Rhea (Adrija Sinha) is briefly treated as a suspect. Anu then signs a confession under pressure from police officer Harsh (Jeet Singh Palawat) and is sent to prison while awaiting trial.

Lawyer Madhav Mishra (Pankaj Tripathi) takes Anu’s case. The criminal charge gives the series its courtroom framework, while her history of abuse supplies its emotional premise: the question is not only what happened in the encounter with Bikram, but how the years leading up to it are understood.
What does the review praise?
Ramnath describes the series as a slow burn and values its attempt to bring unseen violence against women into a courtroom drama. She praises the production and the performances, particularly Kulhari’s portrayal of Anu. She also singles out Adrija Sinha, Pankaj Tripathi, Kalyanee Mulay as Gauri, and Anupriya Goenka as Nikhat.

The story’s most affirming movement, in Ramnath’s reading, comes late, as Anu begins to move from fear toward fighting back. That change gives the title’s language of flight a dramatic counterpoint: Anu’s path is not a simple or quick transformation, but a gradual struggle to find agency.
What are the review’s reservations?
Ramnath argues that the series’ execution sometimes weakens the importance of its subject. She finds Anu’s passivity drawn out and the explanation of abuse dynamics oversimplified. She also objects to narrative detours that pull attention away from Anu, whose experience should anchor the drama.

One such concern is the handling of Madhav’s refusal to acknowledge or share a marital relationship with Ratna (Khushboo Atre). Ramnath criticizes the decision to treat this as comic material in an otherwise grim story. These are the reviewer’s judgments about the show’s choices, rather than neutral descriptions of how every viewer must respond.
Is it worth watching?
For viewers interested in a courtroom drama centered on domestic abuse, the series has a strong central performance and a cast Ramnath regards highly. Her assessment is mixed, however: the production and acting are strengths, while the drawn-out storytelling, simplified account of abuse, and uneven focus can make the drama less effective than its subject warrants.
