YouTube is listed by Google as a supported streaming platform on Roku, but availability can vary by Roku model. If the app is failing, first check whether other Roku apps work and whether YouTube works on another device. Then restart the Roku, check its internet connection, update the app and system software, and reinstall YouTube if needed. Save a factory reset for problems affecting the Roku itself, not just one app.

First, find out whether the problem is YouTube or Roku

A few quick comparisons can prevent unnecessary resets. Test other apps, another video, and another device before changing settings.

  • Other Roku apps fail too: Check the Roku’s network connection, your router, and your internet service. If the Roku itself is unstable across apps, the device or its power supply may also be involved.
  • Only YouTube fails on Roku: Focus on the YouTube app, its sign-in state, Roku compatibility, or a temporary YouTube-side problem.
  • YouTube fails on other devices using the same Wi-Fi: The cause may be a wider YouTube service issue, your network, your internet provider, or DNS settings.
  • Only one video fails: Try other videos. The individual video may have been removed or may be restricted by location, age, account permissions, or Restricted Mode.

Google lists connection, device, app-version, sign-in, and service problems as possible causes of playback errors. Check YouTube’s official help information or service channels for a current interruption; do not assume an outage based on one failed video. See Google’s video-error troubleshooting and Roku’s playback troubleshooting.

Reopen YouTube, then restart Roku

Reopen the app

  1. Press Home on the Roku remote.
  2. Open YouTube again from the Roku Home screen.
  3. Try the same video once more.

Going to Home exits the channel, but it may not clear a system-level problem. If YouTube still will not open or play, restart the Roku itself. Google recommends reopening the TV app before moving on to more involved troubleshooting: Google’s TV playback steps.

Use Roku’s system restart

  1. Press Home.
  2. Select Settings > System > Power > System restart.
  3. If there is no Power submenu, select System restart directly under System.

On a Roku TV, pressing the television’s power button may put it into standby rather than perform a system restart. If you cannot use the menu, unplug the Roku device or TV from power, wait at least 10 seconds, reconnect it, and let it start up. Roku describes a system restart as a low-impact reset that does not change settings. The menu can differ by model; see Roku’s app and restart guidance.

Check Roku’s internet connection

  1. On Roku, open Settings > Network and run the available connection check.
  2. Confirm that the Roku is connected to Wi-Fi and that it also has an internet connection.
  3. If the check fails, restart the modem and router, then run the check again.

If the Roku is connected but YouTube buffers or fails to load, improve the connection before assuming you need a faster internet plan:

  • Move the Roku closer to the router if possible. A streaming stick tucked behind a television may have weak or obstructed Wi-Fi reception.
  • Temporarily pause downloads and other heavy network use, such as game downloads or camera uploads.
  • If playback starts, lower YouTube’s video quality to see whether a less demanding stream plays smoothly.
  • On a guest, hotel, dorm, or managed network, a sign-in portal, device limit, or network filter may block streaming even when basic internet access works.
  • If you use a VPN, custom DNS, ad-blocking DNS, or router filtering, temporarily disable it for a test if you can do so safely. Google notes that DNS settings or third-party software can interfere with access; see Google’s access troubleshooting.

Google’s approximate sustained-speed guidance is shown below. These figures are recommendations, not guarantees: Wi-Fi interference, router congestion, and simultaneous traffic can still cause buffering when a speed test looks adequate. Source: Google’s YouTube video-error guidance.

Playback resolution Approximate recommended sustained speed
4K 20 Mbps
1080p 5 Mbps
720p 2.5 Mbps
480p 1.1 Mbps
360p 0.7 Mbps

If multiple devices and services are having trouble, contact your internet provider. Roku’s network and playback guide also recommends checking the connection, reducing competing traffic, and improving Wi-Fi reception.

Update YouTube and Roku software

Check for a YouTube app update

  1. Press Home and highlight YouTube.
  2. Press the Star (*) button on the remote.
  3. Select Check for updates and install an update if one is offered.
  4. Reopen YouTube and test playback.

Check for a Roku system update

  1. Press Home.
  2. Go to Settings > System > Software update.
  3. Select Check Now and install any available update.

Roku devices normally check for software updates automatically, including periodically every 24–36 hours, but a manual check is useful when troubleshooting or after a device has been disconnected for a while. Menu wording can vary by model or software version. See Roku’s software-update instructions.

Remove and reinstall YouTube

Try a reinstall if YouTube crashes, will not launch, stays on a black screen, or remains broken after updates and a restart. Roku does not provide a conventional per-app YouTube cache-clearing control like some phones do; restarting and reinstalling are the practical Roku recovery steps when app state appears damaged.

Remove YouTube

  1. Press Home and highlight YouTube.
  2. Press the Star (*) button.
  3. Select Remove app and confirm.

Install it again

  1. From Home, open Streaming Store or Search.
  2. Search for YouTube, select the official app, and choose Add app.
  3. Open YouTube and sign in again if prompted.

The current U.S. Roku instructions use Remove app; some older or regional interfaces may say Remove channel. Removing an app is not the same as canceling a subscription. If you pay for a subscription through Roku, check its status in your Roku account before removing the app. Roku’s instructions are at Remove an app and Add apps from the Streaming Store.

Sign out of YouTube and sign in again

Try this when YouTube opens but repeatedly asks for activation, selects the wrong account, loses its sign-in, or fails to recognize an account’s paid access. In YouTube, open the profile icon and account-management area, choose Sign out or remove the account, then return to the sign-in screen and follow the activation method shown there. Exact labels vary by app version.

Make sure you select the intended Google Account and complete any security or verification prompts. If an activation code is displayed, enter it only through the sign-in flow shown by YouTube; do not post or share it publicly. If the account works on a phone or computer but not on Roku, restart YouTube and the Roku, then reset the app’s sign-in state by reinstalling it if necessary. Google’s guidance covers TV playback and account reauthentication and sign-in troubleshooting.

Fix the problem that matches your symptom

YouTube will not open

Restart Roku, check its internet connection, install Roku and YouTube updates, then reinstall YouTube. If Roku reports Can’t run app, Not enough memory, or Insufficient memory, check the connection as well as available storage. Roku says these messages can relate to either a network problem or insufficient storage; removing unused apps may free space. See Roku’s memory-error guidance.

YouTube keeps buffering

Run the Roku connection check, restart the router, reduce competing network traffic, and improve the Roku’s Wi-Fi placement. If the video plays at all, lower its quality. Test another video and YouTube on another device using the same network to distinguish local Wi-Fi trouble from a video-specific or wider service issue.

YouTube crashes or shows a black screen

Check for app and Roku updates, restart Roku, and reinstall YouTube. If other Roku apps also show a black screen, test the television’s selected input, HDMI connection (for an external Roku player), and power rather than treating it as only a YouTube problem. For a streaming stick, use its supplied power equipment; televisions’ USB ports do not all provide identical power.

There is sound but no picture

Try another YouTube video and another app. Restart Roku, confirm the TV is on the correct input, and check picture settings. If the fault appears only with 4K or HDR video, test a lower resolution and check whether the television and any intervening HDMI equipment support that video mode.

There is picture but no sound

Check that the TV is not muted and its volume is up. Test another video and another app, then restart Roku and the TV. If you use a soundbar or receiver, check its selected input and connections; test the TV speakers to determine whether the external audio system is involved. Google’s video-error guidance treats sound issues separately from playback and recommends checking device sound settings.

One video will not play, or YouTube says content is unavailable

Try several other videos. A single unavailable video may have been removed, restricted by region or age, or limited by account permissions or Restricted Mode. If many videos show a message such as “The following content is not available on this app,” check whether the Roku model and its software still support the current YouTube app. Google lists Roku as a supported streaming platform but warns that support can vary by device model; older or unsupported configurations may encounter unavailable-content messages. See Google’s supported-device list and its guidance for content unavailable on an app.

YouTube will not sign in or an activation code fails

Verify that you are using the intended Google Account and that it works on another device. Complete any account security prompts, then reopen YouTube and try again. If the Roku remains stuck in an old sign-in state, sign out or reinstall the app. Never share an activation code with someone offering unsolicited help.

Check whether your Roku model is supported

Google lists Roku among supported streaming-media platforms, but that does not establish support for every Roku model. Do not rely on a generic claim that all Roku devices work with the latest YouTube app. Check the model and software information on your device, then compare it with Google’s supported-device information. The available guidance does not establish a universal model cutoff, so avoid replacing a working device based only on its age.

If the app is unavailable on that model, use another supported way to watch—such as the YouTube app on a compatible smart TV or game console, a supported casting device, or a laptop connected to the TV by HDMI. Google also recommends trying another supported device when TV playback problems persist: TV playback troubleshooting.

Factory-reset Roku only as a last resort

A factory reset is not a routine fix for a YouTube-only glitch. Consider it only if several Roku apps fail, the Roku system itself behaves abnormally, and restarts, updates, network fixes, and app reinstallation have not helped—or if Roku Support recommends it.

Roku’s factory reset removes personal preferences, unlinks the Roku account, removes apps and account information, and requires Guided Setup again. Before proceeding, make sure you know your Roku account credentials and are prepared to reinstall apps and sign in to streaming services. Follow Roku’s factory-reset instructions.

When to contact support or replace the device

  • Contact Roku Support if multiple apps fail, the device repeatedly loses its network connection, it reboots or overheats, power seems unreliable, or the same system problem returns after a reset.
  • Contact YouTube or Google if the Roku works normally in other apps but the issue concerns a Google Account, specific content, or YouTube playback across devices.
  • Contact your internet provider if connection problems affect multiple devices or services on your network.

Replacement is reasonable when the Roku is no longer supported, has persistent hardware or power faults, or fails across apps despite standard troubleshooting. If YouTube is the only broken app and it works elsewhere, replacement hardware is premature; a temporary service problem, app state, account issue, or compatibility detail may be responsible.
