Spotify’s Basic plan is real, but the $10.99 price was its U.S. launch price on June 21, 2024—not a confirmed rate for every subscriber today. Basic is a paid, ad-free music plan without Premium’s included monthly audiobook listening time. Spotify now describes it as an offer for eligible existing Premium subscribers, so check your account for both availability and price before changing plans.
What Spotify Basic is—and what it is not
Spotify introduced Basic in the United States on June 21, 2024, with prices starting at $10.99 per month for eligible subscribers. At launch, Spotify positioned it as Premium’s music benefits without the monthly audiobook listening allowance. The announcement compared it with Premium Individual at $11.99 per month at that time. Basic is not Spotify Free with a different name: Spotify says Basic includes ad-free music, offline downloads, on-demand playback, and high audio quality. What Basic includes and excludes
Spotify’s current U.S. Basic support page lists these Individual benefits:
- Ad-free music listening
- Offline downloads
- Playing songs in any order
- High audio quality
- Music listening while traveling abroad
Those listed benefits do not establish that Basic includes every feature currently promoted with Premium. For example, Spotify’s Premium Individual page lists lossless music, while the Basic page specifies only “high audio quality.” Check Spotify’s account-specific plan details if a particular newer or non-music feature matters to you. Audiobook hours, purchases, and add-ons
Basic excludes the monthly audiobook listening time included with Premium Individual. Spotify says unused Premium audiobook hours expire at the end of each month rather than rolling over. Basic users can still buy individual audiobooks, and Spotify documents Audiobooks+ add-ons for additional listening hours for eligible Premium subscribers. Who can get Spotify Basic now?
Spotify’s current U.S. support guidance describes Basic primarily as an offer for previously existing Premium subscribers. If Spotify makes it available to your account, it should appear among the plans under Manage your plan. If Basic does not appear, Spotify says the account is not currently eligible; the support page does not describe a universal workaround. - Premium Student: Spotify says Basic is not available for Premium Student.
- Duo or Family: Spotify separately documents Basic Duo and Basic Family for eligible plan managers. A household member should not assume they can change the shared plan independently.
- Partner or app-store billing: Check the account’s available options and billing instructions; eligibility and payment arrangements may affect what you can select.
How to check your price and switch
Spotify lists credit or debit card, PayPal, and Google Play Billing as recurring payment methods for switching to Basic. Follow the account flow below, and rely on the price and terms shown in your own confirmation screen. Spotify switching instructions
- Go to spotify.com/account and sign in.
- Under Manage your plan, select Change plan.
- If Basic is available, select it and review the confirmation details before accepting.
- Confirm the displayed monthly price, applicable taxes, next billing date, billing method, and which features will change.
Spotify says the new price is charged on the next billing date. Do not use the historical launch price or the public Premium price as a substitute for the offer shown in your account.

Is the original $10.99 price still available?
Spotify’s U.S. public Premium page currently lists Premium Individual at $12.99 per month, Student at $6.99, Duo at $18.99, and Family at $21.99. Those are public prices for those plans; the page does not establish a universal current Basic price. Spotify U.S. Premium pricing
Basic’s $10.99 figure belongs to its June 2024 launch, when Spotify described the price as starting at that amount for eligible U.S. subscribers. The current Basic price may differ by account, so compare the price shown during plan change with what you pay now. Do not assume a fixed $1 monthly saving: the original comparison used Premium’s 2024 price, and audiobook purchases or add-ons may also affect the value for you.

Who is likely to benefit from Basic?
- Music-first listener: Basic is worth considering if you mostly want ad-free, offline, on-demand music and the account offer is cheaper than your current plan.
- Occasional audiobook listener: Compare the account price with the cost of buying the specific titles you want; the monthly included hours are not part of Basic.
- Frequent audiobook listener: Premium’s monthly allowance or another audiobook option may suit you better, particularly if you regularly use the included hours.
- Feature-dependent listener: Check the exact Basic feature list if you rely on lossless audio or other non-music Premium features; Spotify cautions that some non-music features may be unavailable.
- Student or household-plan subscriber: Check your plan role and eligibility before making assumptions; Student is excluded, and Duo or Family changes are a manager-level decision.
Think carefully before canceling Basic
Switching from an eligible Premium plan to Basic is different from canceling. Spotify says that if you cancel Basic, the account moves to Spotify Free at the end of the billing period, and you cannot resubscribe to Basic afterward.
