Castero is a full-screen terminal podcast client, not just a shell command or standalone audio player. It manages podcast feeds and episodes, queues playback, saves episodes for offline listening, and hands audio playback to VLC or mpv/libmpv. It remains usable for a simple, local, keyboard-driven workflow, but its latest visible GitHub release is v0.9.5 from April 3, 2022. Treat compatibility with current systems as uncertain, and consider a newer client if you need recent releases, synchronization, or modern podcast features.

What is castero?

Castero is a Python-based podcast client that runs in a terminal. “Command-line podcast player” is a common shorthand, but “terminal podcast manager and player” is more precise: most interaction takes place in a full-screen, keyboard-controlled interface. You can subscribe to feeds, refresh episodes, track played status, queue episodes, and save them for offline playback. Audio itself is played through an external media player, VLC or mpv/libmpv, rather than by castero alone. Feed and episode information is stored locally in SQLite. Project documentation

The project is MIT-licensed. Its documented workflow centers on entering a feed URL; do not assume it includes a podcast search or discovery service. PyPI project page

Is castero still maintained?

The latest release listed on the project’s GitHub releases page is v0.9.5, published April 3, 2022. It added a default_layout configuration setting, fixed a help-screen crash in very small terminals, and included minor dependency updates. Earlier release notes describe saved playback positions and feed-related fixes, but an old feature note is not a guarantee of current compatibility. Release history

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

That release is several years old as of 2026. The available project information does not establish that castero is abandoned, nor does it establish active development or support for current Python versions, operating systems, media-player libraries, or every podcast feed. Its README’s stated minimums—Python 3.5, SQLite3, and either VLC 2.2.3 or newer or mpv/libmpv 0.14.0 or newer—are historical requirements, not a current compatibility promise.

In practice, castero is a reasonable trial for someone comfortable with Python environments and audio setup. If you depend on current maintenance, cross-device synchronization, or modern feed extensions, compare alternatives before moving your listening workflow.

What you need before installing

  • Python 3.5 or newer is the project’s documented historical minimum; test the version available on your system rather than assuming a current Python release works.
  • SQLite3 is required for the local feed and episode database.
  • Install VLC, or mpv together with the libmpv integration castero needs. A successful Python package install does not by itself ensure playback will work.
  • A terminal that supports the interface and, for listening, a usable audio output on the machine running castero.

Check what is available before troubleshooting:

python3 --version
sqlite3 --version
vlc --version
mpv --version

The project’s documented requirements and setup notes are on its GitHub page. Platform-specific behavior is not established by a current compatibility matrix, so treat Linux, macOS, BSD, Windows, containers, and remote sessions as environments to test rather than as equally verified configurations.

How to install castero

For a first attempt, use a virtual environment. It keeps castero and its Python dependencies separate from system-managed packages and makes it easier to remove or retest the installation.

How to add a podcast and start listening

  1. Start castero by running castero in the environment where you installed it.

  2. Press a and enter the podcast’s RSS or Atom feed URL. A show’s website address is not necessarily its feed address.

  3. Select the feed and press r to refresh it when you want to check for new episodes.

  4. Select an episode and press Enter to play it, Space to add it to the queue, or s to save it for offline playback.

Press h in the running application for its built-in help. Feed publishers may provide only a limited episode history. Private or authenticated feeds, malformed XML, unusual metadata, redirects, TLS issues, and server-side blocks can also prevent a feed from loading. A successful refresh only means castero could read feed information; it does not ensure that each episode’s media URL will be reachable or playable.

Keyboard shortcuts

These are the documented controls. Check the built-in help in your installed version because behavior can differ between versions or documentation copies.

Key Function
h Show help
q Exit
a Add a feed
d Delete the selected feed
r Reload or refresh feeds
s Save an episode for offline playback
Up / Down Move through menus
Left / Right Navigate between panes or menu levels
Page Up / Page Down Scroll
Enter Play the selected feed or episode
Space Add the selected item to the queue
c Clear the queue
n Play the next queued episode
i Invert menu order
/ Filter the current contents
m Mark an episode played or unplayed
p or k Pause or resume
f or l Seek forward
b or j Seek backward
= / - Increase or decrease volume
] / [ Increase or decrease playback speed
u Show the episode URL
1–5 Change layout

The distinction between the three episode actions is useful: Enter starts playback, Space queues an item, and s saves it. Saving enables offline playback only if the download succeeds and the media can be played by the configured backend.

Importing or exporting subscriptions with OPML

Castero supports OPML import and export for podcast subscriptions. OPML is a portable list of feed subscriptions, not a complete account backup: do not assume it carries listening history, playback positions, downloads, queue state, credentials, or per-feed settings. The destination application must support OPML, and a listed feed may later move or become unavailable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The project documentation directs users to the command-line help for the exact options. Run castero --help, identify the import or export flags supported by your installed version, then use those flags with the path to your OPML file. Do not rely on a flag name copied from another version. Project documentation

Configuration, data, and backups

The project documents these default locations:

  • ~/.config/castero/castero.conf for configuration.
  • ~/.local/share/castero/ for user data, including the feed database and downloaded episodes.

These files are not intended for manual modification. Before changing configuration, exit castero and make a backup. For example:

cp -a ~/.config/castero ~/castero-config-backup
cp -a ~/.local/share/castero ~/castero-data-backup

Then change one setting at a time, restart the application, and restore the backup if it stops launching. Release v0.9.5 specifically added the default_layout setting, but that does not establish that every setting from older configuration examples works in every version. Removing the database causes castero to recreate it empty on the next launch; do not delete the data directory unless you are prepared to lose the stored database and potentially downloaded episodes. Troubleshooting

castero: command not found

The package may have been installed into a Python environment that is not active, or into a user-local scripts directory missing from PATH. Check the package and user base:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
python3 -m pip show castero
python3 -m site --user-base

If you installed into a virtual environment, activate it before launching. For a user installation, add the reported user-bin directory to PATH and start a new shell.

Package installation fails

Capture the Python and pip versions, then the installation error:

python3 --version
python3 -m pip --version
python3 -m pip install castero

Possible causes include incompatibility with a current Python release, dependency resolution problems, or a platform-specific build failure. Test in an isolated virtual environment; do not downgrade system Python blindly.

A feed will not load or refresh

  • Confirm you entered an RSS or Atom feed URL, not just the show’s website.
  • Check whether the URL returns feed XML and is reachable from the same network.
  • Look for authentication requirements, blocked client requests, redirects, DNS or TLS problems, and malformed feed data.
  • If the feed loads but a particular episode does not, test that episode’s media URL separately; feed parsing and media playback are different stages.

The feed loads, but there is no audio

Check that a supported player is installed and discoverable, then restart castero:

Playback can still fail if the media URL is unavailable, the system has no usable audio output, or castero is incompatible with the installed player integration. With mpv, the executable alone may not provide the libmpv integration the application expects.

The screen is cramped or behaves oddly over SSH

Increase the terminal size and relaunch. Version 0.9.5 fixed a crash opening help in a very small terminal, but narrow windows, unusual $TERM values, or terminal multiplexers can still affect display and key handling. The interface may work over SSH, but audio normally plays on the machine running castero and its media player—not automatically on the computer connected as the SSH client. A headless server can download episodes without having an audio device for playback.

Playback or queue state seems to be missing

Exit castero and inspect the configuration and data directories before attempting a reset. Back them up first; deleting the database can remove stored feed information, and removing the data directory can affect downloaded episodes. State behavior may vary by version, so do not treat an older release note about saved playback positions as a guarantee for your installation. Release history

Privacy and practical trade-offs

Castero stores feed data and configuration locally and does not require a commercial account or proprietary synchronization service in the documented workflow. Local storage is not the same as offline-only use: refreshing feeds and accessing remote audio requires network requests, which feed publishers and media hosts can observe. Downloaded files can also include publisher-supplied tracking mechanisms. Installing the Python package and a separate media player adds dependencies to your software supply chain; use PyPI or the official repository and follow your organization’s package-verification rules where applicable. The MIT license and local data model are not a security audit. PyPI project metadata

Should you use castero or an alternative?

Castero’s strengths are a direct terminal workflow, keyboard control, local feed management, queueing, offline saving, playback controls, and OPML support. Its trade-offs are an aging release, external player requirements, uncertain compatibility with current environments, and no established cloud sync or support for modern features such as chapters and transcripts in the reviewed documentation. Choose based on the job rather than on the word “terminal” alone:

Client Best fit What distinguishes it
Castero A simple, local, interactive terminal podcast workflow Python TUI; external VLC or mpv/libmpv playback; OPML subscriptions; latest visible release v0.9.5 from April 3, 2022. Release history
Podliner A newer terminal client with broader features Its project documentation describes Linux, macOS, and Windows installation paths, OPML, gPodder-compatible synchronization, offline playback, chapters, queues, sleep timers, and VLC, mpv, or ffplay engines. It is GPLv3-licensed and has a broader feature surface than castero. Podliner project
Poca Automated or scheduled podcast downloading and file management Python CLI focused on feed filtering, episode limits, metadata, file naming, logging, user-agent settings, redirects, and interrupted downloads; less clearly an interactive player. Its documentation lists Python 3.6 or later and dependencies including requests, feedparser, lxml, and mutagen. Poca documentation
gPodder A mature desktop podcast workflow, with a command-line utility available Primarily a graphical client rather than a full-screen TUI. Its official site lists version 3.11.5, released December 17, 2024, and downloads for Windows, macOS, Linux/BSD, and other platforms. gPodder project
Newsboat with Podboat RSS users who want podcast downloads integrated into a modular workflow Podboat is a terminal download manager that works as a Newsboat helper; it is not an all-in-one interactive podcast player like castero, so playback is a separate workflow. Podboat manual

Try castero if its local TUI model is the point and you can verify that it works in your environment. Prefer Podliner if you want a newer terminal-oriented feature set and documented synchronization or chapters; consider Poca for scripted downloads, gPodder for a desktop client, or Podboat if your podcast workflow begins in Newsboat.
