If Netflix shows -1023, start by force-stopping the app, restarting your device and updating Netflix. The best-documented reports concern Android, but Netflix does not currently publish a dedicated public definition or guaranteed fix for this code. Check the exact code on screen, then work through the low-risk steps below before reinstalling the app.
What does Netflix error 1023 mean?
Netflix’s public troubleshooting page lets users search by error code or symptom, but it does not provide a dedicated definition for 1023 or -1023. The best-documented match is a rare Android app issue reported in January 2022. That report described the message “Sorry, we couldn’t reach the Netflix service. Please try again later” and said Netflix support had acknowledged the issue as under investigation, without publishing a definitive cause or code-specific fix.
The message suggests that the app did not complete a request to Netflix, but that is an inference—not an official diagnosis. The code alone does not establish an account suspension, payment failure, incorrect password, slow connection, or service outage. Preserve the exact format shown on your screen: the minus sign may matter, and a different full code can point to a different problem. How to fix Netflix error -1023
Try these steps in order, from quick and reversible to more disruptive. Android menu names differ by manufacturer and version.

- Record the details. Note whether the screen says 1023 or -1023, the full message, your device model, Android version, Netflix app version, and whether you are on Wi-Fi, mobile data, or both. Also check whether Netflix works in a browser or on another device.
- Force-stop Netflix. On most Android devices, open Settings > Apps (or Apps & notifications) > Netflix > Force stop. Confirm if prompted, then reopen the app. This is among the workarounds reported for the Android issue.
- Restart the phone or tablet. Shut down or restart the device, then open Netflix again. Restarting is a low-risk way to refresh temporary device and app state; Netflix also recommends restarting affected devices in its TV and streaming-device troubleshooting guide and playback and freezing guidance.
- Update Netflix from the official app store. Search for Netflix in Google Play and install an available update. An update may help, but Netflix has not guaranteed that a particular update fixes -1023. If Google Play says Netflix is unavailable or incompatible, check the device’s support status rather than installing an unofficial APK. Netflix says an Android TV-based device without Netflix in Google Play may not be compatible: see its compatibility guidance.
- Switch networks to test the connection. Try trusted Wi-Fi if you are on mobile data, or mobile data if you are on Wi-Fi. If Netflix works on one network but not the other, focus on the router or network settings; this test does not prove that a slow connection caused the error. Test another app or website too.
- Restart your home network if the problem is on Wi-Fi. Netflix’s guidance is to turn off the affected device, unplug the modem and router, wait about 30 seconds, reconnect them, wait roughly one minute, then try again. Equipment can take longer to reconnect. Netflix also recommends testing connection-related playback problems with Fast.com.
- Temporarily disable network intermediaries. If you use a VPN, proxy, custom DNS, or filtering service, turn it off briefly and retry Netflix. This is a diagnostic test, not a confirmed -1023 fix. Avoid changing advanced DNS settings as a first step.
- Clear the Netflix cache. On many Android devices, go to Settings > Apps > Netflix > Storage or Storage & cache, then tap Clear cache. Reopen the app. Menu labels vary. Clear storage or Clear data is more disruptive: it removes local app information and may require you to sign in again. Netflix’s general guidance discusses refreshing stored device information, but does not publish a dedicated cache procedure for -1023.
- Sign out and back in, if Netflix opens far enough. Use the app’s menu and look for Get Help or the profile/menu area, then choose Sign out and sign in again. Labels may differ on a phone or tablet. Netflix documents sign-out and reset options for supported TV and streaming devices in its device troubleshooting guide.
- Reinstall Netflix if the error remains. Uninstall the app, restart the device, then reinstall it from Google Play and sign in. Have your Netflix login and access to any two-factor authentication ready. Downloads may need to be downloaded again. Reinstallation was reported as a workaround, not a guaranteed cure.
- Contact Netflix if the steps do not resolve it. Search the Netflix Help Center using the complete code and message, or contact Customer Service. Share your device model, operating-system and app versions, network type, and the steps you have tried.
How to tell whether the problem is the device, network, or account
Compare devices and networks before making disruptive changes. These results are clues, not proof of a particular cause.

Check the full error before treating it as Netflix -1023
Do not rely on the numeric fragment alone. The screen may show a minus sign, a longer code such as one beginning with NW-, UI-, or TVQ-, or an HTTP error in a browser. Search for the complete code and message in Netflix Help rather than applying a fix meant for a different error.

Cloudflare’s Error 1023 documentation describes a separate HTTP 503 access-denied response. That is not the same as the reported Netflix Android app error -1023.
When to check compatibility or consider another device
Compatibility becomes a stronger possibility if you use an old phone or tablet, an unofficial Android TV box, a rooted or modified device, or a sideloaded Netflix app. None of those details alone proves they caused -1023. First check whether Netflix is available through the official app store and whether the device meets Netflix’s requirements. Netflix says that if its app is unavailable in Google Play on an Android TV-based device, the device may not be compatible.

If the device is unsupported or Netflix continues to fail there after a clean reinstall while working elsewhere, using a supported phone, TV, streaming player, or console is a practical alternative. A replacement device is not a code-specific fix; verify official Netflix availability and compatibility before buying one.

If the manufacturer recommends a reset for a separate device problem, back up important data first and follow that manufacturer’s instructions.
