Roku’s latest major update is a U.S. Home Screen redesign that began rolling out on May 27, 2026. It adds AI-assisted personalization and search that adapts to the section you are browsing. Roku Voice also supports hands-free commands and conversational questions on compatible setups, but those capabilities are not all new to the 2026 update. Most existing compatible Roku owners do not need to buy a new player to try voice features.
What changed in Roku’s May 2026 update?
Roku says the redesign is its biggest Home Screen update in more than a decade. The rollout began for Roku devices in the United States on May 27, 2026; availability elsewhere may vary. The changes focus on finding and returning to content, rather than introducing a single new voice assistant. Roku’s announcement and its feature history describe the rollout.
- A redesigned navigation menu: The left-side menu stays collapsed until needed, leaving more room for the Home Screen.
- Adaptive Quick Access: Roku says this area can adjust based on viewing and usage habits, surfacing frequently used apps and shortcuts.
- Top Picks for You and For You: Personalized recommendations and a destination for discovery are intended to help viewers find something to watch.
- Genre and mood destinations: Sections such as comedy, movies, and sports organize content by interest.
- Contextual search: Search can adapt to the destination in view—for example, offering sports-related suggestions in Sports or free content in Free.
- Daily Scoop: An AI-powered row highlights breakout shows, cultural trends, and current topics.
- Shortcuts and Roku City: The interface includes access to functions such as Continue Watching, Save List, and Sleep Timer, alongside Roku City discovery features.
These are interface and discovery changes. Roku’s description does not establish that every device gets every element at once, or that recommendations will be equally useful to every viewer.
What does “better search” mean?
The clearest change is contextual search: results and suggestions can reflect the Roku destination a viewer is browsing. That is different from saying Roku replaced its entire search system. Roku had already added search within What to Watch and Live TV Zone in a feature release dated November 7, 2025, according to its feature history.

Roku Voice can also search by title, actor, genre, or a broader request. Depending on the query and available services, Roku may show search results or content tiles rather than immediately start playback. Availability can depend on region, provider, subscription, and the app’s support for voice controls. Roku’s OS release notes describe search results when direct playback is not available.
What Roku Voice can do—and what was already available
Roku Voice is a platform capability separate from the May 2026 Home Screen rollout. Roku’s current voice guide documents several kinds of voice input and control:
Rank #2
- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)

Push-to-talk voice
With a compatible voice remote, press and hold its microphone or magnifying-glass button, say a request, then release the button. Examples include “search for comedies,” “turn it up,” or “launch The Roku Channel.” You can use it for searches and supported Roku system commands.
Hands-free voice
Select remotes, including the Roku Voice Remote Pro 2nd Edition, support hands-free commands. Enable the remote’s hands-free switch and say “Hey Roku” followed by a supported request, such as pausing, changing the volume, showing the news, turning captions on, or playing music. A standard remote without hands-free hardware cannot listen for the wake phrase.

Conversational content discovery
Roku documents questions about movies, shows, and actors, including follow-ups such as whether a film is appropriate for teenagers. This is conversational discovery, not evidence of an unrestricted chatbot or a guarantee that every answer is generated by AI. The support guide lists this discovery feature in English in the United States.
The date matters: Roku’s feature history lists voice access to Backdrops, Continue Watching, and Save List under a July 18, 2025 release—not as features newly introduced by the May 2026 Home Screen rollout.

What you need to use voice
Roku’s support documentation lists compatible streaming devices running Roku OS 9.4 or later for voice features. Its guidance for push-to-talk and hands-free voice modes documents Roku OS 10.0 or higher; hands-free use also requires a supported remote. Compatibility can differ between a Roku TV and a streaming player, and between device models.
| Voice option | What it requires | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Push-to-talk remote | A compatible Roku device and paired Roku Voice Remote, Enhanced Voice Remote, Voice Remote Pro, or Roku Touch tabletop remote, as supported by the device. | Hold the microphone or magnifying-glass button while speaking. A basic remote without voice hardware cannot provide remote voice input. |
| Hands-free remote | A compatible device and select hands-free remote, such as the Roku Voice Remote Pro 2nd Edition. | Enable hands-free mode and use “Hey Roku” commands. Not every voice remote supports this mode. |
| Roku mobile app | The free Roku app for iOS or Android, a compatible Roku device, and microphone permission for voice input. | Use the app’s virtual remote or search screen to speak a query; no new voice remote is required. |
Roku lists voice search and control in English, German, Portuguese, French, and Spanish across a defined group of countries, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Mexico, Brazil, and several Latin American and European markets. The narrower conversational entertainment-discovery feature is listed for the United States in English. Check Roku’s current support page for the applicable country and language before relying on a particular feature.

How to use voice search and control
With a Roku voice remote
- Confirm the Roku device is compatible and updated, and pair the voice remote with it.
- Press and hold the remote’s microphone or magnifying-glass button.
- Speak a search or command, then release the button.
- Choose from the results, or let Roku carry out the supported system action.
With hands-free voice
- Use a supported hands-free remote and switch hands-free mode on.
- Keep the remote nearby—Roku recommends roughly 10 to 12 feet—and direct your speech toward the remote.
- Say “Hey Roku” followed by a supported command.
With the Roku mobile app
- Open the app and tap Remote, then the Voice button; alternatively, tap the Search box and then its microphone icon.
- Allow microphone access if prompted.
- Speak the query and review the results, or use the app to control the Roku device.
What to check when voice control fails
- Remote commands fail or work intermittently: Check that the voice remote is paired; pair it again if necessary.
- There is no microphone button: The remote may not have voice hardware. Try the mobile app instead.
- “Hey Roku” does not respond: Confirm hands-free mode is enabled and that the remote is within range. Reduce competing TV audio and speak toward the remote.
- Speech is misrecognized: Speak naturally and clearly rather than over-enunciating.
- The wake phrase takes too long: Roku recommends trying Fast TV Start.
- The feature or answer is missing: Check device, country, and language support; content-discovery questions have narrower availability than basic voice commands.
- You still cannot use voice: Search with the on-screen keyboard or use the Roku mobile app.
Do you need to buy a remote or a new Roku?
Usually not just to get voice search. If your compatible Roku runs the required software, an existing voice remote may be enough; the free mobile app is another route. A new remote makes sense if yours lacks a microphone or you specifically want hands-free “Hey Roku” commands. A new player is more relevant if your current model cannot receive the needed software or you also want a performance, Wi-Fi, or 4K/HDR upgrade. Roku’s player lineup describes its current hardware options; check the model’s specifications against your needs rather than buying solely for the Home Screen rollout.
Personalization also has a trade-off: adaptive shortcuts and recommendation rows may save time for viewers who like discovery, but feel less predictable or more crowded to someone who mainly wants a fixed list of apps. “AI-powered” describes Roku’s positioning of personalization and discovery; it does not mean voice control works identically in every third-party app. App-level functions such as seeking or skipping depend on the app’s supported controls, as outlined in Roku’s developer documentation.
Should you switch platforms instead?
If the update is prompting a broader platform decision, compare ecosystems and interface preferences rather than treating voice features as interchangeable. Apple TV 4K is a potential fit for households invested in Apple devices, Siri, AirPlay, and Apple services. Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Max may suit households centered on Alexa and Amazon services. Neither option is necessary to use Roku’s software update, and the best choice depends on the services and devices a household already uses.
