VMedia launched RiverTV on June 4, 2020, as a standalone Canadian live-TV streaming service with more than 30 channels, a seven-day free trial and a $16.99 CAD monthly price. RiverTV is still operating, but its current website identifies Videotron Ltd. as the operator and advertises 30 channels, a 30-day trial and the same monthly price. The lineup and terms have changed since launch.
What RiverTV was when it launched
RiverTV debuted as an over-the-top (OTT) service: customers could stream live television over an internet connection without subscribing to VMedia internet. That distinguished it from VMedia’s more traditional IPTV television offering, which was tied to VMedia internet. The launch package had no term contract, cost $16.99 CAD per month and included a seven-day free trial, according to MobileSyrup’s June 4, 2020 launch report.
The launch pitch was aimed at cord-cutters who still wanted a familiar live-TV guide and a mix of Canadian specialty networks, local television, children’s programming, news, lifestyle shows and movies. It was not positioned as a replacement for a deep subscription-video catalogue.
Which channels were in the launch package?
MobileSyrup reported more than 30 bundled live channels and listed examples including Global TV, CHCH, W Network, Adult Swim, Showcase, Slice, History, Teletoon, Treehouse, YTV Family, Family Jr., H2, Lifetime, Cottage Life, Makeful, MovieTime, Silver Screen, Smithsonian Channel, Cheddar, Drink TV, Law & Crime, Newsmax, Newsy, Real Vision and Revolt TV.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That is a historical sample, not a confirmed complete lineup. Global TV’s local feed varied by region, and a channel’s appearance in a 2020 launch list does not establish that it remains available today. Check the current RiverTV channel list before subscribing.
What RiverTV offers now
RiverTV’s current site advertises 30 live channels, live and on-demand programming, and thousands of hours of entertainment. It also describes look-back access in the TV guide, pausing and resuming, and restarting eligible programs from the beginning. The service remains focused on live television with supplementary on-demand viewing; “on demand” does not mean every channel offers a complete season or a large archive.

The current website identifies the operator as Videotron Ltd., doing business as RiverTV. That is a change in corporate attribution from the 2020 launch coverage, which presented RiverTV as VMedia’s new service. The current channel page is the better reference for what is included now, since channel lineups and rights can change.
Price, trial and add-ons
As displayed on RiverTV’s website on August 18, 2026, the base service costs $16.99 CAD per month and advertises a 30-day free trial with cancellation at any time. The same page notes a seven-day trial for CBC and ICI channels, so the trial should not be assumed to apply identically to every channel or package. Verify the terms shown during signup.

Devices and viewing features
At launch, reported support included Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV and iOS, and Android TV. Android, Windows 10 and macOS apps were described as planned additions at the time; those plans should not be confused with present compatibility.

RiverTV’s current TV guide says viewers can use a web app on a computer or mobile device, as well as Roku, Amazon Fire, Apple devices and Android devices. Platform support does not guarantee compatibility with every hardware generation or operating-system version, so check the provider’s current compatibility information before signing up.
Launch coverage also described pause and resume for live television, restarting a program from the beginning, a “My TV” area for favourite channels and an on-demand section. Its early review characterized the on-demand catalogue as limited, sometimes offering only one or two episodes of a show. The current service advertises look-back, pause/resume and restart features, but availability depends on programming rights; a live channel does not necessarily carry full catch-up or on-demand access.

Channel changes and regional differences
Local Global feeds vary by region, and channel access can also depend on package, geography and licensing rights. A channel in a historical list may have left the service, while a current lineup can change after publication. RiverTV’s homepage carried a notice, as of August 18, 2026, that Cheddar News, Euronews, Fashion & Style 4K and World Poker Tour would no longer be available after August 31, 2026. That was an upcoming removal notice at the time, not confirmation that the channels had already disappeared.
RiverTV is not the same as Freedom TV
RiverTV is presented as its own streaming service, with a separate signup flow. Freedom TV is a distinct service powered by VMedia and offered to eligible Freedom Home Internet customers; it is not simply another name for RiverTV. See Freedom TV’s plans and Freedom’s service information for its eligibility and product details.
Quick Recap
Who is RiverTV a good fit for?
- Consider it if you want Canadian live channels without a conventional cable subscription, value specialty, news, lifestyle or children’s programming, and have a compatible device.
- Look elsewhere if your household is sports-focused, primarily wants premium scripted series or blockbuster films, or expects a large Netflix-style on-demand library.
- Compare the actual channel list with what you watch. A 30-channel package can be useful if it includes your favourites, but channel count alone says little about whether the service fits.
- Do not assume all rights are alike: trial length, local feeds, restart, look-back and on-demand access can vary by channel or region.
