Spotify Lossless is available to eligible Premium subscribers in supported markets. It is included with Premium—not a separate HiFi subscription—and streams music in FLAC at up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz. To enable it, choose Lossless under Settings and privacy → Media quality. For lossless playback end to end, use a wired connection or a supported Spotify Connect device; Spotify says Bluetooth transmits audio with compression.
What Spotify launched—and what happened to HiFi
Spotify announced a planned CD-quality feature called Spotify HiFi in February 2021, but it did not launch that year. The feature eventually arrived under a different name: Lossless, as a benefit for eligible Premium subscribers. Spotify announced the rollout on September 10, 2025, and said on October 6, 2025, that it had reached more than 50 markets, including the United States. Spotify’s 2021 HiFi announcement and 2025 launch announcement establish the distinction.
Spotify’s current offering is Lossless on Premium, not a separately priced “HiFi” tier. Access depends on local availability, account and plan eligibility, software, playback device, and the content being played. Spotify’s support documentation describes lossless playback for eligible Premium listeners with supported hardware; other listeners may receive a compressed version. Check the Spotify Premium page for your market if Lossless is not available in your account.

What Lossless quality means
Spotify Lossless uses FLAC and supports music at up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz, according to Spotify’s Lossless overview. “Lossless” means the stream can preserve the audio data in the delivered file rather than discarding data through lossy encoding. It does not mean every recording was originally made or mastered at that maximum resolution, nor does it change a track’s mix or mastering.
The 44.1 kHz sampling rate is CD-resolution sampling. The 24-bit depth is higher than standard CD’s 16-bit depth, but Spotify’s stated ceiling is not 24-bit/96 kHz or 24-bit/192 kHz. Maximum sample rate alone also does not determine whether music sounds better: the recording and mastering, playback chain, room, and listener all matter.

Lossless is for music tracks, not Spotify’s entire catalog. Spotify says music videos, podcasts, and audiobooks are not available in Lossless. Content availability can also vary by track. Its artist support page says Spotify prefers FLAC delivery and selects the best playback format for eligible listeners: Spotify’s lossless audio information for artists.
How to turn on Lossless
On a phone or tablet
- Open Spotify and tap your profile picture.
- Go to Settings and privacy → Media quality.
- Set Wi-Fi streaming to Lossless. Set Cellular streaming separately if you want it there, and set Downloads to Lossless if you want lossless offline copies.
On desktop
- Select your profile picture and open Settings and privacy.
- Choose Media quality.
- Set the available streaming and download options to Lossless. Streaming options may differ by device and connection.
On a third-party or Spotify Connect device
- Start playing a song and tap the device icon.
- Select the playback device, then choose Change quality settings.
- Choose Lossless. For multi-room devices, Spotify’s support path is device icon → Connect → Go to settings → Lossless.
Spotify’s instructions for settings, device playback, and downloads are on its Lossless audio quality support page. That page lists mobile app version 9.0.58 or later and desktop app version 1.2.67 or later; those are the versions shown by an Estonia-region support page, not a guarantee that the same requirement applies to every country, operating system, or device.
Check whether playback is using Lossless
Look for the Lossless label in the Now Playing view or playback bar, or in the Connect picker. Spotify’s Connect Lossless overview describes the playback indicator. A label confirms the selected playback quality, but it does not mean a Bluetooth connection carries the original stream without compression.

Choose a playback path that preserves the stream
Wired headphones or speakers
A wired connection avoids the Bluetooth compression step. Use headphones, speakers, or a wired audio system that can handle the playback resolution; a dedicated DAC is not automatically necessary. Spotify recommends Wi-Fi and wired headphones or speakers, or a non-Bluetooth route such as a compatible Spotify Connect device, for the best experience. You do not need to buy new gear just because Lossless is available: first try your existing wired setup.
Bluetooth
Spotify says current Bluetooth connections do not provide enough bandwidth to transmit Lossless without compression. Bluetooth headphones can still sound very good, but the wireless link means the audio is not reaching them as an unchanged lossless stream. Setting Spotify to Lossless does not remove that limitation.

Connect can send audio over a supported network playback route instead of Bluetooth. Support is device- and software-specific: Spotify’s launch announcement named products from Sony, Bose, Samsung, and Sennheiser, and said support for additional devices, including Sonos and Amazon products, was arriving during the rollout. Confirm current Lossless compatibility for the exact device and firmware rather than assuming that every Connect-compatible product supports Lossless.

Connection, data use, and downloads
Spotify recommends a steady connection of 1.5–2 Mbps for Lossless listening. This is a recommendation, not a promise against buffering: stability, congestion, Wi-Fi quality, and the playback device also matter. Lossless files are larger than compressed streams, so they can use more cellular data and offline storage, take longer to download, and be less forgiving of an unstable connection.
Streaming and download settings are separate. If you switch Downloads to Lossless, Spotify may prompt you to update existing offline copies with Update to Lossless. Enabling Lossless streaming alone does not necessarily replace songs already downloaded at a lower quality. For less data use, keep cellular streaming at a lower setting, use Lossless on Wi-Fi, and reserve lossless downloads for the music you want offline in that quality.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why it may not sound different
Lossless is technically more faithful to the delivered audio file, but it does not guarantee a noticeable improvement for every listener or setup. The recording and mastering, headphones or speakers, room noise, hearing, and playback route affect what you perceive. Spotify says loudness normalization still applies across formats, so a louder version is not evidence of higher fidelity. To compare formats, use the same track and master, keep playback levels matched, and avoid Bluetooth if you are trying to assess the lossless stream itself. Spotify discusses format and loudness normalization in its artist support documentation.

Fix common Lossless problems
The Lossless option is missing
- Check that your account has an eligible Premium plan and that the feature is available in your market.
- Update Spotify, then check Settings and privacy → Media quality again.
- Try a music track rather than a podcast, audiobook, or music video.
- Check whether the selected device and playback route support Lossless; an incompatible device may not offer the setting.
The Lossless label appears, but playback buffers
- Switch to a stable Wi-Fi connection.
- Check for current firmware on the playback device.
- If buffering continues, lower the quality temporarily.
- If using a third-party device, reconnect through Spotify Connect.
- After enabling Lossless downloads, update existing downloaded tracks if Spotify offers Update to Lossless.
Spotify lists incompatible hardware, incorrect settings, weak internet, and unavailable content among possible causes on its Lossless troubleshooting page.
Is Spotify competitive with other lossless services?
Spotify’s clear technical limit is up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC. If your priority is access to 24-bit/96 kHz or 24-bit/192 kHz material, compare other services’ current formats and catalogs directly; do not assume a higher maximum alone will sound better. Apple Music, TIDAL, Qobuz, and Amazon Music may suit listeners whose devices, existing subscriptions, catalog preferences, or hi-fi browsing and download needs fit those services better. Current prices and exact quality tiers are not established here, so check each service’s official page before deciding: Apple Music, TIDAL, Qobuz, and Amazon Music Unlimited.
For many listeners, discovery, playlists, library availability, offline behavior, device support, family rules, and app usability matter more than the highest published sample rate. Spotify’s practical advantage is that existing subscribers can try Lossless without changing services; listeners seeking higher-resolution catalogs or a different hardware ecosystem have reasons to compare alternatives.
