Why Has Netflix Stopped Working on My TV? Troubleshooting Guide

Netflix failing on your TV? Identify whether the cause is the app, network, sign-in, device software, or outdated built-in support—then work through the safest fixes first.

Netflix usually stops working because of a stuck app, a TV or streaming-device problem, a network interruption, an expired sign-in session, or software that is no longer supported—not because the television has necessarily failed. First identify whether Netflix alone is affected, fully restart the device, and check the home network. Save resets and hardware replacement for later.

Start by identifying what has stopped working

Netflix may run in the TV itself or on a separate Roku, Fire TV Stick, Apple TV, game console, cable box, or other connected device. Troubleshooting depends on which one is running the app. Then note the symptom: does Netflix fail to open, stay on a loading screen, crash to the home screen, show a black screen, play without a picture, buffer, or display an error code? If the remote and TV menus are frozen too, the problem is broader than Netflix.

What you see Likely area First action
Netflix will not open or keeps loading App/device data or connection Fully restart the TV or streaming device
Netflix crashes to the home screen App data or outdated software Restart, then check for app and device updates
Netflix and other apps fail TV connection, router, or internet service Test the network and restart modem/router
Only playback buffers or pauses Weak or unstable connection Test the connection; try Ethernet if available
The whole TV or connected device is frozen Device software or operating state Unplug and power-cycle the affected device
Netflix works elsewhere but not on this TV TV app, software, or device compatibility Update the TV/app; check whether the app is still supported

Check whether the problem is Netflix, the TV, or the network

Compare Netflix on the TV with another internet app on that same TV. Then test Netflix on a phone or computer connected to the same home Wi-Fi—not cellular data—and, if possible, on another TV-connected device.

  • If Netflix fails across devices but other internet services work, check the account and the current Netflix error guidance; a service issue is possible but cannot be inferred from one device failing.
  • If Netflix alone fails on the TV while other apps work, focus on the Netflix app, its sign-in session, or the TV’s software and compatibility.
  • If several TV apps fail, focus on the TV’s network connection, router, or internet service provider.
  • If Netflix works through an HDMI streamer but not through the TV’s built-in app, the TV’s app environment is the likely issue.

For current error-message instructions, use Netflix’s troubleshooting hub.

Fully restart the TV or streaming device

A quick press of the remote’s power button may leave a smart TV in standby. Netflix recommends fully turning off the device and, where applicable, unplugging it for at least 15 seconds before restarting it. This is a useful first step when Netflix freezes, will not load, or behaves abnormally. See Netflix’s device restart steps.

  1. Close Netflix and turn off the TV and any separate streamer, console, or set-top box running Netflix.
  2. Unplug the affected device from power. If Netflix runs on a separate streamer, restart that device as well as the TV if either appears frozen.
  3. Wait at least 15 seconds, reconnect power, and turn the device back on.
  4. Open Netflix and try again.

For some smart TVs, Netflix gives a longer power-discharge procedure: unplug the TV, press its physical power button once, leave it unplugged for three minutes (or at least one minute after pressing the button), then reconnect and test. The instructions are at Netflix’s TV troubleshooting page.

Restart the modem and router if Netflix cannot connect

If the TV reports that it is offline, other apps also fail, or playback repeatedly loses connection, restart the home network before changing settings or factory-resetting anything.

  1. Turn off or unplug the TV or streaming device.
  2. Unplug the modem and router from power for 30 seconds.
  3. Plug in the modem first and wait for its indicator lights to settle.
  4. If the router is separate, plug it in and wait about one minute for it to reconnect.
  5. Turn on the TV or streaming device and test Netflix.

Some equipment takes longer to reconnect. This is a restart, not a factory reset: do not press a router reset button, which can erase Wi-Fi and custom configuration. Netflix’s instructions are at “Unable to connect to Netflix” and device troubleshooting.

Test the TV’s internet connection and buffering

Open another streaming app, run the TV’s built-in network test if it has one, and confirm that the TV is connected to the intended Wi-Fi network. A TV moved farther from the router may have an unreliable signal even when a nearby phone works. If practical, connect the TV or streamer temporarily by Ethernet, or test Netflix on a phone using the same Wi-Fi.

For buffering rather than a total connection failure, check signal strength, router placement, and household network use. Netflix identifies weak or unstable internet as a common cause and notes that some mobile-hotspot, cellular, public Wi-Fi, or satellite connections may be too slow or inconsistent. Its guidance is at Netflix buffering and slow playback. You can also use Fast.com, which tests the connection to Netflix; a single result does not by itself establish the cause of an intermittent problem.

If the TV says it is online but Netflix cannot connect, or several devices have unreliable service, contact the internet provider about an outage or connection quality. For device-specific network instructions, consult the TV or streamer manufacturer.

Sign out of Netflix and sign back in

If Netflix opens but repeatedly rejects the session or behaves as though account data is stale, sign out and sign back in. Netflix’s menu layout varies by device and app version:

  1. Open the Netflix home screen and press the remote’s Back button to open the menu.
  2. If the menu runs across the top, go left to the profile icon. Select Get Help, then Sign out, and confirm with Yes.
  3. If the menu is on the left, select Get Help at the bottom, then choose Sign out.
  4. Sign in again and test playback.

If there is no Get Help or Sign out option, Netflix documents this remote sequence as a fallback: Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, Up, Up, Up, Up. Depending on the device, the menu may offer Sign out, Reset, Start Over, or Deactivate. See Netflix’s instructions for the ui-800-3 error.

Update Netflix and the TV or streaming device

An app update may fix a crash or failed launch; a TV or streamer software update may be needed for the current app to run. Menu names differ by manufacturer and software version, so use the device’s own settings rather than assuming one path applies to every television.

  • Open the TV or streaming device’s app store, search for Netflix, and select Update if offered. Restart the device after the update.
  • As one example, Netflix’s Sony Android/Google TV path is Home > Apps > Play Store > My Apps > Netflix > Update. Samsung, LG, Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, and other platforms have different menus.
  • For system software, look in device Settings under a heading such as Support, System, About, or Software Update. Install an available update, restart, and test.

If a device remains unusable after ordinary troubleshooting, Netflix directs users to the manufacturer for firmware and restoration guidance: Netflix’s “Not connected to the Internet” help.

Reset or reinstall Netflix only after simpler fixes

If restarting, checking the network, signing in again, and updating have not helped, use the reset options available on that platform. Depending on the device, this may mean clearing Netflix app data or cache, choosing Reset from an error screen, removing and reinstalling the app, or force-closing and reopening it. Roku calls apps channels, so removal and reinstallation are managed through its channel interface.

Record your Netflix sign-in details first. Resetting can sign you out and remove downloads or other stored app data; a TV factory reset is more extensive and can erase installed apps, Wi-Fi credentials, and personal settings. Netflix explains the device-wide distinction at its guidance for a frozen TV or device. Treat a factory reset as a last resort and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Check VPN, proxy, or custom DNS settings if you use them

This is an advanced branch, not a routine first fix. A VPN, proxy, filtered DNS service, custom DNS server, or unusual router configuration can interfere with Netflix. If you knowingly use one, temporarily disable the VPN or proxy and restore the device’s network settings to default; remove custom DNS settings temporarily, reconnect, and test. Netflix lists these connection variables at its TV troubleshooting page.

Netflix lists service addresses that some devices must be able to reach, including secure.netflix.com, appboot.netflix.com, uiboot.netflix.com, and fast.com. Most viewers should not alter firewall rules themselves; ask the network administrator or internet provider for help if access filtering is involved.

If the entire TV or device is frozen

If the remote, menus, and other apps do not respond, troubleshoot the TV or connected device rather than Netflix alone. Unplug it, wait at least 15 seconds, reconnect it, and check for a system update. If it still freezes, contact the manufacturer for model-specific recovery or original-settings instructions. Netflix’s steps cover smart TVs and connected devices such as streaming sticks, media players, set-top boxes, Apple TV, Xbox, and PlayStation: Netflix device-freeze troubleshooting.

When the built-in Netflix app may no longer be supported

A television can remain a perfectly usable display after its built-in app stops receiving updates. Suspect a support limit when Netflix is missing from the TV’s app store, cannot be updated, the manufacturer no longer provides relevant software updates, and Netflix works on another device on the same network. Check the exact TV model and region with the manufacturer and Netflix before concluding that support has ended.

Compatibility can also depend on the Netflix plan. Netflix says a small percentage of devices cannot support its ad-supported experience because the app or device operating system cannot be updated to software that supports ads. That does not establish that every Netflix plan fails on every affected device; check the exact device, software, plan, and country. Netflix ad-supported device compatibility.

If the television has a working HDMI input, a separate supported streaming device can replace the TV’s app platform without replacing the display. Confirm that the TV has an available HDMI port and that the streamer has power and reliable internet. This will not fix an account problem, an internet outage, a faulty HDMI input, or poor Wi-Fi. Netflix lists Roku device support and model capabilities; Roku’s U.S. players page and Apple’s U.S. Apple TV 4K page list their respective current products and supported services. Check current price and availability directly with the manufacturer.
