Roku still lets you display personal photos, but the feature originally called Photo Streams is now part of Roku Backdrops. You can upload images or connect Google Photos, then start a photo display that can be configured to behave like a screensaver. The exact controls—and whether it starts in the situation you expect—depend on your Roku device and software.
What happened to Roku Photo Streams?
The headline refers to Roku OS 11, announced on March 22, 2022. That update introduced Photo Streams, which let users upload pictures from a phone or computer and use them in a personalized screensaver. Roku has since moved the feature into Backdrops. Roku says existing Photo Streams pictures should already appear under My Photos, so you do not need to upload them again. Roku’s Roku OS 11 announcement and its Photo Streams-to-Backdrops guide explain the change.
Backdrops is broader than the old name suggests: it can show uploaded photos, connected Google Photos albums, or Roku-curated artwork. It is best understood as an ambient display that can be set up to act like a screensaver, not as a guarantee that the old Photo Streams behavior works identically on every Roku.
Check your Roku and photos before setting it up
- Backdrops availability and controls vary by device and software. Roku recommends searching for “Backdrops” in the Roku Streaming Store or checking the Home Screen Menu settings if it is not visible.
- Roku’s upload formats are JPG, PNG, HEIC, and WEBP. You can create up to 10 uploaded albums and add up to 20 photos at a time, with up to 100 photos in each album; your Roku account’s storage limit may lower that maximum. Roku’s Backdrops instructions list these requirements.
- Backdrops displays one album at a time. Roku says uploaded Backdrops pictures and Google Photos content cannot be combined in one album. The separate Favorites album supports up to 1,000 images, according to Roku’s transition guide.
- You will need an internet connection for cloud-uploaded or connected photos to load, and you should use the Roku account associated with your TV or player.
Roku TVs, streaming players, streaming sticks, and third-party televisions using the Roku platform are not interchangeable for every control. Roku specifically says the remote power-button shortcut for launching Backdrops is supported only on Roku TVs, not streaming sticks connected to a TV. That restriction concerns the shortcut; it does not establish that every other Backdrops function is unavailable on every stick. Roku provides separate information for Roku-branded TVs and TV requirements.

Upload photos to Backdrops
- On the Roku Home screen, open the Backdrops app.
- Select Add your photos, then choose Upload photos.
- Scan the QR code with a phone or tablet and follow the prompts.
- Sign in at backdrops.roku.com with the Roku.com account linked to the device, then upload your pictures.
- Return to the Roku and select the album you want to display.
If an album is missing, first confirm that the upload used the same Roku account that is signed in on the device. A different account can make a successful upload appear to have vanished.
Connect a Google Photos album
Google Photos is an account connection rather than a direct upload of a local phone folder. Roku’s setup requires the Google Photos mobile app:

For one image, open it and choose Start Backdrops. In Backdrops options, set Image Duration > Don’t Change to keep that image displayed. Roku warns about this setting on OLED displays; when it detects OLED, Backdrops rotates images every five minutes as burn-in protection. A static image may therefore not remain on screen as intended on an OLED TV.
Make Backdrops start like a screensaver
Roku’s transition guide describes setting Backdrops to auto-start after 10 minutes, then going to Settings > Theme > Screensaver start time and selecting Disable screensaver. The guide says this prevents the ordinary Roku screensaver from interrupting the chosen photos or artwork.

Roku’s newer Backdrops instructions give a different path: Home > Settings > System > Power > Auto Power Savings, where enabling Auto Power Savings allows Backdrops to auto-start. These are two documented menu routes, not one universal sequence; labels and settings can vary by device, software version, and rollout. Use the options that actually appear on your Roku.
This setup provides an automatically starting photo display, but it may not behave like a traditional system-wide screensaver in every context. Roku’s documentation does not establish that Backdrops starts over every third-party streaming app. Some owners report that it starts from the Roku interface but not while another app is open; treat that as a reported device- or software-dependent limitation, not a rule confirmed for every Roku. User reports about Backdrops behavior describe that issue.

Fix common Backdrops problems
| Problem | What to try |
|---|---|
| Backdrops is missing | Search for Backdrops in the Roku Streaming Store, then check Settings > Home Screen Menu for a Backdrops entry. |
| Uploaded photos do not appear | Verify the Roku account used for the upload matches the account on the device; then allow time for the album to sync and reopen Backdrops. |
| An upload fails or a picture will not display | Check that the image is JPG, PNG, HEIC, or WEBP and that the internet connection is stable. Restart the Roku and try again. |
| Backdrops does not start automatically | Check the Auto Power Savings path and, if present, the Backdrops auto-start and screensaver-start-time options. Menu names vary by device. |
| The remote power-button shortcut is unavailable | That shortcut is documented for Roku TVs, not streaming sticks connected to a TV. |
| Images load slowly or not at all | Test the Roku’s internet connection; Roku recommends checking connectivity when images are slow or fail to appear. |
If the old Photo Streams entry has disappeared, look for Backdrops instead: Roku describes the change as Photo Streams moving to Backdrops. If the feature remains unavailable after checking the app, menu, connection, and account, contact Roku support.
Should you buy a different Roku for photo screensavers?
Usually not if the only goal is to recover the old Photo Streams experience. Backdrops is free, and buying another streaming player is not a guarantee of identical screensaver behavior. A new device may make sense if you also need a replacement for an aging player, newer streaming features, or better connectivity—but choose it for those needs, not on the assumption that it will restore old Photo Streams controls. If you want a completely custom Roku screensaver rather than Backdrops, Roku treats screensavers as developer-built applications, not a normal consumer setting: Roku developer documentation on screensavers.
