To stop YouTube from starting another video when the current one ends, open a video and switch Autoplay off in the player. On phones and tablets, you can also turn it off in YouTube’s settings. The preference may differ by device, so check each device where you watch.
What “Up Next” autoplay does
YouTube’s Autoplay feature starts another related video after the current video ends. “Up Next” describes the next item in the playback sequence; the setting to change is called Autoplay. YouTube’s Autoplay help page documents the controls for computers, mobile devices, TVs and casting.
Other kinds of automatic playback are separate. Video previews while scrolling, a playlist or queue that continues, and playback on a cast session may not be controlled by the same switch.
Turn off Autoplay on the device you’re using
Computer
- Open YouTube and start any video.
- Move the pointer over the player if its controls are hidden.
- Click the Autoplay switch at the bottom of the player so it is Off.
- Let the video finish, or play another video, to check that the next one does not start automatically.
Android, iPhone and iPad
In the YouTube app, the documented settings path is Profile picture → Settings → Autoplay. Switch Autoplay off. You can also open a video, tap the player to reveal its controls, and switch Autoplay off there.

Menu labels and locations can vary with the app version, account, device or YouTube interface changes. If the path differs, look for Autoplay in the app’s settings or use the control on a video’s watch screen.
Smart TV or game console
In the YouTube app on the TV or console, open Settings, find Autoplay, and select Off. If you watch YouTube directly in that app, check the setting there rather than relying on a change made on your phone. YouTube also describes settings in its TV app help.

When casting from a phone or tablet
YouTube says Autoplay can be controlled from the device casting to the TV. Start a cast, tap the playback control bar at the bottom of the phone or tablet screen, expand the queue or playback controls, and turn Autoplay off. If videos continue on the TV, check both the casting device’s controls and the TV app’s setting; an active queue or TV session may be continuing playback.
Stop just the next video once
If the end-of-video countdown has already started, choose Cancel on the prompt before the next video begins. Cancel stops that immediate transition; turning Autoplay off changes the ongoing preference for the device or viewing context. YouTube documents both controls on its Autoplay help page.

If videos play while you scroll through Home
Autoplay for the next video is different from previews or playback in YouTube’s feeds. If videos start as you browse Home or subscriptions, look for a separate Playback in feeds setting rather than changing only the watch-page Autoplay switch.
A YouTube Product Expert response in the Help Community gives this path: Profile picture → Settings → General → Playback in feeds, then choose Off or, where offered, Wi-Fi only. This is community guidance, not the main Autoplay documentation, and the option or menu may not appear for every account or app version. Why autoplay may seem to continue
- You changed a different setting. Turning off next-video Autoplay does not necessarily stop feed previews.
- You changed it on another device. YouTube says Autoplay settings can differ between devices. Check the computer, phone, TV or console where playback is happening.
- A playlist, queue or cast session is active. Check its playback controls and remove any videos you do not want to play.
- The account is supervised. Supervised accounts may not show the ordinary Autoplay control if a parent has disabled it. YouTube says Autoplay is off by default for users aged 13–17; available controls depend on account supervision.
- The setting or playback controls are behaving unexpectedly. Close and reopen the app or browser, update the app or browser, then test the setting again. These are troubleshooting steps, not guaranteed fixes.
- A browser extension may be affecting playback. YouTube says extensions can affect video playback. Temporarily disable an extension or allow YouTube in it to test, without assuming that an extension is necessarily the cause of Autoplay specifically. See YouTube’s playback troubleshooting guidance.
If the setting still does not behave as expected, check the same control while signed into the relevant account and on the device where the issue occurs. A private or incognito window, or a different account, can help identify whether the behavior is tied to an account or browser session.

A prompt asking whether to continue watching interrupts uninterrupted playback; it is not the switch for stopping Up Next. YouTube documents the prompt after 30 minutes on mobile, 60 minutes on the web and 180 minutes on TV. These are platform-specific timings for that prompt, not a universal Autoplay-off rule. YouTube’s general Autoplay help also describes automatic stopping after inactivity under certain network conditions: 30 minutes on a mobile network and four hours on Wi-Fi. Those are separate conditions from the Continue watching prompt, so the timings should not be treated as one rule. See the Autoplay help page.
What to expect when Autoplay is off
Turning off next-video Autoplay prevents hands-free continuation; you will need to choose the next video yourself. It does not necessarily disable previews in feeds or stop a playlist, queue or cast session from continuing under its own controls. You do not need YouTube Premium to change the standard Autoplay setting.
