Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →In June 2020, WarnerMedia announced that it would retire HBO Go in the United States and rename HBO Now as HBO. HBO Max, which had launched that May, was meant to become the main streaming destination, offering HBO programming alongside a broader library. HBO itself was not disappearing. The service name changed again afterward: HBO Max became Max in 2023, then returned to HBO Max in 2025.
What WarnerMedia announced in 2020
The June 12, 2020 announcement concerned streaming products and their names, not the end of HBO as a television channel or programming brand. HBO Go was scheduled to be discontinued in the U.S. on July 31, 2020. HBO Now, the standalone streaming service, was to be rebranded as HBO. HBO Max was positioned as the expanded service for HBO and additional WarnerMedia programming. Engadget reported the announced transition dates, while TechCrunch described the naming strategy.
How the services differed
| Service | How people generally accessed it | Role in the 2020 transition |
|---|---|---|
| HBO Go | Streaming access for people who subscribed to HBO through a participating cable, satellite, or virtual pay-TV provider. | The U.S. app was scheduled to be retired; provider authentication could continue for some customers for a limited period. |
| HBO Now | A standalone HBO streaming subscription for customers without a traditional HBO TV subscription. | The service was rebranded as HBO. Eligible direct-billed subscribers received HBO Max access at launch at no additional cost. |
| HBO Max | A broader streaming service, launched in the U.S. on May 27, 2020. | It combined HBO programming with a larger WarnerMedia catalog and originals. |
The distinction between Go and Now was chiefly how a customer qualified for and paid for access, not merely two names for the same account arrangement. HBO Max was intended to bring those viewing needs into a broader platform, though access and migration depended on subscription and provider arrangements.
Why retire HBO Go and HBO Now?
With HBO Go, HBO Now, and the newly launched HBO Max all in circulation, customers could reasonably struggle to tell which app or subscription they needed. WarnerMedia said the changes would simplify the offering and strengthen HBO Max as the primary platform. The goal was to make HBO Max the place for both HBO and additional programming, rather than maintain several similarly named consumer services.

What HBO Max added at launch
WarnerMedia described the U.S. launch library as approximately 10,000 hours of programming. It included HBO films and series, Warner Bros. library titles, Max Originals, and material from brands including DC, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, TBS, TNT, and truTV. That was a description of the launch offering, not a promise that every title would remain available indefinitely or in every country. WarnerMedia’s launch announcement and its earlier HBO Max overview set out the platform’s intended scope.
What happened to subscribers
If you used HBO Go
HBO Go was scheduled to end in the U.S. on July 31, 2020. Engadget reported that some customers could continue authenticating through the app until August 31, 2020. The end of the app was not necessarily the same as cancellation of the customer’s underlying HBO subscription. Customers generally needed to use HBO Max if their pay-TV provider supported it; eligibility and device support depended on provider agreements.
If you subscribed to HBO Now directly
HBO Now was to become HBO as a service name, while HBO Max served as the expanded option. At HBO Max’s launch, existing HBO Now direct-billed subscribers were offered HBO Max access at no additional cost, subject to account and device arrangements. This does not mean every HBO customer, regardless of how they paid, was automatically moved to the same plan.

If HBO came through a TV or other provider
Check the provider that bills you to find out whether your subscription includes HBO Max and how to activate it. Provider participation, supported devices, and account authentication affect access. A provider saying HBO Max is included does not always mean the customer should create a new paid subscription; first follow that provider’s activation instructions and identify the account associated with the existing HBO service.

How the name changed after 2020
- May 27, 2020: HBO Max launched in the United States as a broader streaming service. WarnerMedia’s launch notice gave the launch date.
- 2020: HBO Go was retired in the U.S., and HBO Now was rebranded as HBO.
- 2023: Warner Bros. Discovery renamed HBO Max as Max. The company announced the new service identity in its Max launch announcement.
- 2025: The service returned to the HBO Max name. The change was reported as taking effect in July 2025; see the Associated Press report and the July 2025 implementation report from Cadena SER.
That history explains why older instructions may refer to Max even though the current U.S. service uses HBO Max. The original 2020 announcement was specifically about the U.S.; streaming products, names, and launch schedules have differed in other countries.
HBO and HBO Max are not the same thing
HBO remains a programming brand and television channel. HBO Max is the streaming service that includes HBO programming plus additional content. HBO’s current brand overview describes the relationship, and its official FAQs explain ways U.S. viewers can access HBO. The service’s catalog can vary by territory and licensing arrangements, so a title’s past inclusion does not guarantee it is available now.

For U.S. viewers, HBO Max’s current help pages also describe an HBO-only subscription option, which is distinct from the broader HBO Max catalog. The official HBO-only information page lists the option and its terms. Compare what a plan includes rather than assuming that a subscription carrying the HBO name gives access to the full streaming catalog.

Common account and app problems
Which app should I use?
In markets where the service is available under that name, the current streaming destination is HBO Max. HBO Go and HBO Now are legacy U.S. names, and searches for them can surface outdated instructions. Use the official HBO Max app listing for your device and region rather than an unofficial download.
How do I find who bills me?
Check the payment description on your bank or card statement and the subscriptions section of the platform through which you may have signed up, such as Apple, Google Play, Roku, or Amazon. If your HBO access came with a cable or other provider package, contact that provider. HBO Max’s billing and subscription guidance explains how billing routes affect account changes.
Can I cancel by deleting the app?
No. Removing an app from a device does not cancel the subscription. Cancel through the company that bills you, following the relevant provider’s process. See HBO Max’s cancellation guidance.

Why can’t I change my plan in HBO Max?
Your billing provider may control the plan. Identify the biller, then make changes through that company’s account tools or support rather than repeatedly starting a new subscription. Provider offerings and plan availability are not necessarily identical to direct HBO Max billing.
Why the 2020 dates should not be applied worldwide
The July 31, 2020 HBO Go sunset and the reported limited authentication period through August 31 referred to the U.S. service. Other countries have had different products, names, launch dates, and distribution arrangements. HBO Max’s regional availability information and general service information show why access and pricing should be checked for the viewer’s country rather than inferred from the U.S. timeline.
