The key catch is device availability: EE’s current documentation specifically describes both features in the EE TV app on Apple TV 4K. What are EE Smart Search and Mood Matcher?
Smart Search finds programmes from a description
EE describes Smart Search as conversational, AI-powered search. Instead of entering a title, viewers can describe a mood, theme, plot detail or remembered line—for example, “a feel-good film”, “a British crime drama set in a small town” or “films with plot twists”. It is intended to interpret the kind of programme being described, rather than just match title keywords. Mood Matcher makes suggestions through questions
Mood Matcher is a guided recommendation feature inside Smart Search. Choose it, answer questions about genres, moods and themes, then browse the suggestions. In short, Smart Search is for when you know the sort of thing you want but not its name; Mood Matcher is for when you are unsure what you want to watch.
EE confirms the question-and-recommendation flow, but does not explain in its available support material how much viewing history informs the suggestions or whether they are limited by a viewer’s subscriptions.

When did the features launch?
EE announced Smart Search and Mood Matcher on 31 March 2026 for its UK TV service. The company presented them as a way to make a large mix of live, on-demand and streaming choices easier to navigate. EE also described Smart Search as the UK’s first conversational AI-powered search on a pay-TV service; that is EE’s claim, not an independently established industry comparison. EE’s announcement cited a Censuswide survey of 2,000 UK respondents conducted in March 2026, reporting that nearly half relied on their phones to decide what to watch. This is EE-commissioned research, not a general measure independently verified here.
Which devices support Smart Search and Mood Matcher?
Current documented support is the EE TV app on Apple TV 4K. EE’s app help page lists Apple TV 4K with tvOS 15 or later. App availability and labels can change, so check EE’s current app and Web Player help if the feature is missing.
How to use Smart Search on Apple TV 4K
- Open the EE TV app.
- Select Search in the top-left corner.
- Type a description, or press and hold the voice-control button in the centre of the Apple TV remote.
- Describe what you want to watch, such as a cooking programme, something funny or a film with plot twists.
- Review the matches from live TV, on-demand content and available streaming services.
Voice input is optional; you can type instead. A conversational search can help when a title escapes you, but the available information does not establish that it will identify every obscure quote or description.
How to use Mood Matcher
- Open Search in the EE TV app.
- Select Mood Matcher.
- Answer the questions about genres, moods and themes.
- Browse the resulting recommendations.
Do search results mean the programme is included?
No. EE says results can cover available streaming apps as well as live and on-demand TV, not every service or title. A result may require a separate subscription, an app login, a rental or a purchase. Which services and programmes appear can depend on the EE package, the apps available and signed in on the device, and changing UK rights. Treat the search result as a discovery lead, not proof that playback is included in your bill.

If a programme will not play, open its details to identify the service, check whether your package includes it, and confirm that the relevant app is installed and signed in. If necessary, search for the title directly in that app. EE’s channel guide can help check package and channel information.
What does “AI-powered” tell viewers—and what does it not?
EE uses the term “AI-powered” for Smart Search, and the documented practical feature is natural-language discovery by mood, theme, plot description and remembered dialogue. The available EE information does not identify the underlying model or supplier, explain whether conversations are retained, establish how results are ranked, or say how extensively viewing history affects recommendations. Those details should not be inferred from the AI label.
Is it worth changing your EE TV setup?
Where it could help
- You often spend time scrolling across services without knowing a programme’s title.
- Your household has trouble agreeing on what to watch and would use a guided set of suggestions.
- You already use the EE TV app on Apple TV 4K and want a more descriptive way to search.
Where the benefit may be limited
- You usually know exactly what you want, or mainly watch within one streaming app.
- You use Box Pro or Box Edge and are considering an upgrade solely for these features; confirm support for your device first.
- You expect every result to be included with EE TV or your existing subscriptions.
The feature’s value rests on what services it can surface and whether the result is playable under your subscriptions. It does not remove the need for access to the service carrying a programme.

What should you check before buying EE TV hardware?
EE TV is tied to EE Broadband, and the right device depends on more than search. EE describes Box Pro as supporting recording—up to 600 hours according to its overview—while Box Edge does not record live TV but supports pausing and rewinding live TV for up to two hours. These capabilities are separate from Smart Search availability. EE’s device overview
EE’s March 2026 price guide lists a £30 activation fee for Box Pro, Box Edge and Apple TV 4K; it also lists £11.99 delivery in the relevant existing-customer scenario. EE’s Apple TV 4K page lists Apple TV free for six months, then £9.99 per month from month seven unless cancelled, and an additional EE TV Box Mini at £10 per month. These are specific listed charges and offers, not a complete quote: package availability and the total cost depend on the customer’s order and terms. Do not buy an Apple TV 4K solely for Smart Search unless you also want EE TV’s broader live-TV and service integration. The features are documented in the EE TV app on Apple TV 4K, but the programmes they find may still carry separate subscription or rental costs.

If a feature or programme is missing
Smart Search or Mood Matcher is not visible
- Confirm you are using the EE TV app on Apple TV 4K; support on Box Pro and Box Edge should not be assumed.
- Check that the app and Apple TV software are up to date, and that the account is linked to an EE TV subscription.
- Consult EE’s current app support information for compatible devices and instructions.
A search does not find the programme
- Try a shorter description, or combine a genre with one plot detail.
- Try an actor, character or remembered phrase, or type instead of speaking.
- If you know the title, search for it directly; otherwise try the individual streaming app.
A result appears but will not play
Check which service carries it, whether your EE package or separate subscription includes it, and whether you are signed in to that app. Availability can change, so a result is not a guarantee of continued access.
Playback buffers despite search working
Finding a programme and streaming it are separate tasks: playback still depends on the connection and the service delivering the content. EE says Apple TV 4K and Box Edge use internet mode, while Box Pro can use internet or aerial mode. Its channel guide recommends aerial mode for Box Pro where broadband speeds are below 22 Mbps, provided there is a working aerial.
