Spotify Connect lets you control playback on one device from another and move a listening session between compatible devices. Sign in to the same Spotify account on your Windows PC, Mac, and iPhone or iPad, start playback, open Connect device, and choose where to listen. This is playback handoff—not synchronized audio: one Spotify account can play on only one device at a time.
What Spotify Connect syncs—and what it does not
Spotify Connect is a remote control and playback handoff feature. For example, you can use Spotify on an iPhone to select a Mac as the playback device, then pause, skip, or change tracks from the phone. Spotify supports Connect on compatible computers, speakers, TVs, game consoles, cars, and other products; support varies by device. Spotify Connect details and supported devices.
- Account content: Playlists, saved music, account settings, and listening history are associated with your account and appear when you sign in to that account.
- Playback session: Connect can move the active session to another device. The current track and queue may carry over, but do not rely on every queue state, local file, or offline item surviving interruptions or app restarts.
- Not multi-device audio: Connect does not combine Windows, Mac, and iOS outputs into one synchronized stream. Spotify says one account can play on one device at a time. Spotify’s supported-device guidance.
- Not file synchronization: Local audio files on a computer are not automatically copied to an iPhone. Spotify Local Files have separate setup and limitations. Spotify Local Files guidance.
Connect is distinct from Bluetooth, AirPlay, and Chromecast/Google Cast, which use their own device and output systems. Spotify Jam is for collaborative queue participation, not personal playback handoff.
What you need
- The Spotify app installed and signed in on each device, using the same account.
- An internet connection and a device that supports Spotify Connect.
- The devices on the same Wi-Fi for the most reliable initial discovery, especially when connecting to a speaker or other network playback device. This is not an absolute requirement in every case: Spotify says a signed-in target may sometimes appear even when it is on another network.
- Current Spotify apps and operating systems. Spotify’s published minimums are Windows 10 64-bit or later, macOS 12.0 or later, and iOS/iPadOS 16.1 or later. Requirements may change; check Spotify’s live supported-devices page before troubleshooting an older device.
- On iPhone or iPad, permission for Spotify to access the local network.
Spotify’s Web Player has more limited device discovery than its apps. Spotify says it can use devices already logged into or Google Cast devices on the current network when using Chrome; if a target is missing, try the native app. Spotify Connect and Web Player guidance.

Set up Spotify Connect
- Install Spotify. Use Spotify’s desktop app on Windows or Mac and the Spotify app from the App Store on iPhone or iPad. The Web Player is an alternative, but the native app is generally the better choice for discovery. Supported devices and app information.
- Sign in to the same account. Open Spotify on each device and check the account shown in the app. If a target does not appear, signing in directly on that device can help it become visible. Spotify’s Connect troubleshooting.
- Connect to Wi-Fi. For first-time discovery, place the devices on the same Wi-Fi network. Avoid guest or workplace networks that isolate devices from one another.
- Allow local-network access on iOS. On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Spotify > Local Network and turn the permission on. The wording or location can vary slightly by iOS/iPadOS version.
- Start playback. Play a track, album, podcast, or playlist in Spotify on any device.
- Open the device menu. Tap or click Connect device, the speaker/device control in the Now Playing area or bar.
- Choose the playback destination. Select the Windows PC, Mac, iPhone/iPad, or compatible speaker. Playback should continue on the selected device, while Spotify on the other device acts as a controller.
Move playback between devices
To switch from a Mac to Windows, or from a computer to an iPhone, keep playback active, open Connect device on a device with Spotify open, and select the new destination. Wait for the track to transfer before closing the app or putting the target to sleep. Repeat the same process to move playback to a compatible speaker or TV.
If playback has been paused for more than 10 minutes, Spotify says you may need to reconnect. Spotify Connect guidance.
Platform-specific checks
Windows
- Use the Spotify desktop app and keep it open and signed in while testing.
- Check that Spotify is not in Offline mode. If the PC is missing or cannot play, check Windows Firewall and security software for network restrictions, then restart Spotify and confirm the PC has internet access. Spotify’s offline and network troubleshooting.
- Keep the computer awake during playback; a sleeping PC may stop playing or disappear as an available target.
Mac
- Use the Spotify desktop app and confirm it is not in Offline mode. In Spotify, use the Spotify menu in the Apple menu bar to check the offline setting. Spotify’s offline guidance.
- If the Mac is not discoverable, check macOS firewall or network-security software and make sure the Mac is awake.
- If Connect selects the Mac but you hear no sound, check the Mac’s selected sound output and system volume as well as Spotify’s volume.
iPhone and iPad
- Keep Wi-Fi on and grant Spotify Local Network access at Settings > Spotify > Local Network.
- For discovery, use the Spotify app rather than relying on the Web Player.
- If iPhone hardware volume buttons do not change a connected third-party device’s volume, use the volume slider in Spotify’s Connect menu. Spotify attributes this limitation to Apple discontinuing the technology that enabled the control; it is not an iPhone fault. Spotify Connect guidance.
Troubleshoot common Connect problems
The computer or phone does not appear
- Confirm both devices are signed in to the same Spotify account.
- Put them on the same Wi-Fi network and make sure neither is on a guest or isolated network.
- On iPhone or iPad, enable Settings > Spotify > Local Network.
- In Spotify on mobile, check Settings > Apps and devices > Local device visibility.
- Restart Spotify on both devices, then restart the target device.
- Update Spotify and the operating systems; restart Wi-Fi or test another network.
- Temporarily test without a VPN, firewall rule, antivirus network filter, or enterprise restriction that may block local discovery.
- Sign in directly on the target and try the native app if you were using the Web Player.
These steps follow Spotify’s Connect troubleshooting guidance. Spotify Connect support.

Several devices have the same name
Try each identically named entry one at a time. Spotify recommends testing duplicate entries individually and renaming devices. Spotify Connect support.

- Check internet access on the target and confirm Spotify is not in Offline mode. Spotify’s desktop guidance also recommends checking firewall rules, network restrictions, and Wi-Fi. Offline troubleshooting.

- Bluetooth: Useful for headphones or a basic speaker that does not support Connect. Pair the audio device in your computer or phone’s system settings and keep the source device within range; that source must remain connected. Spotify Bluetooth guidance.
- AirPlay: A separate Apple playback route for AirPlay-compatible speakers and receivers. It can be a useful fallback if Connect discovery is unreliable. Spotify speaker playback options.
- Chromecast/Google Cast: A separate option for compatible receivers. Spotify documents Google Cast support in Chrome’s Web Player for devices on the current network; use the native Spotify app if the desired target is not listed. Spotify Connect and Web Player guidance.
- Spotify Jam: Choose Jam when people want to contribute to a shared queue. It is collaborative listening, not a way to make one account play simultaneously on multiple devices.
For a speaker or receiver purchase, confirm that the exact model supports Spotify Connect; Bluetooth capability alone does not mean it supports Connect. Device support varies by manufacturer. Spotify supported-device information.
Account and compatibility limits to keep in mind
Spotify Connect’s basic device switching is not stated as requiring Premium; Spotify has described Connect as available to all users. Plan features and availability can change, so check Spotify’s current explanation rather than upgrading solely for basic handoff. Spotify’s Connect announcement.
