A show can be followed without a paid plan, and a paid plan may cover an individual show or a channel of shows. Billing may also be handled by a provider outside Apple Podcasts.
Follow a free podcast on iPhone or iPad
- Open Podcasts and search or browse for the show.
- Open its information page and tap Follow. In some layouts, you can tap Follow directly in search results. You can also open an episode, tap More (…) , then tap Follow Show.
Find followed shows at Library > Shows. On iPad, open Library in the sidebar and select Shows. Apple says following can provide new-episode notifications and automatic downloads, depending on settings and device conditions. Its follow and unfollow instructions cover both actions; Apple also describes the alternate ways to follow a show.
Subscribe to paid podcast content
Some creators offer premium episodes, early access, ad-free listening, or other subscriber benefits. Availability and offers vary by country or region, language, show, and creator; not every show has a paid option.

- In Podcasts, find the show or channel and open its page.
- Tap the available subscription control, such as Subscribe or a trial offer, then authenticate and complete the purchase.
Apple says subscribing automatically follows the show. A channel may include multiple shows. Depending on the creator, a plan may be monthly or annual; check the offer shown before confirming. Apple documents subscribing on iPhone and iPad, including that Apple Podcasts subscriptions can be shared with up to five other Family Sharing members.
Find and cancel an Apple-billed subscription
Use the subscription manager, not the show’s Unfollow control. Apple explicitly says unfollowing a show does not cancel its paid subscription.
On iPhone
- Open Podcasts and tap Home.
- Tap the account or profile button, then Manage Subscriptions.
- Select the podcast subscription, choose the cancellation control, and confirm.
On iPad
- Open Podcasts and choose Account > Account Settings from the menu bar.
- Tap Manage Subscriptions, select the subscription, and cancel it.
After cancelling, check the displayed status and renewal or access information. Cancellation stops future renewal; do not assume it immediately removes premium episodes or saved downloads. Apple may change navigation labels between software releases, so if the tab arrangement differs, look for Manage Subscriptions in the account area. If the plan is not listed, it may be a free follow, use a different Apple Account, or be billed by another app, website, or provider. Check the account or billing record for the company that charged you. For a subscription purchased elsewhere, cancellation and account support generally remain with that provider.

Unfollow a show without cancelling paid access
- Open Podcasts > Library > Shows and select the show.
- Tap More (…), then Unfollow.
- If prompted, choose whether to keep or remove downloaded episodes.
Keeping downloads preserves existing offline copies but stops new automatic downloads for that show. Unfollowing does not cancel a paid plan; cancel Apple-billed plans separately through Manage Subscriptions. Apple’s instructions for following and unfollowing explain the prompt.
Remove downloads and control storage
Remove one downloaded episode
In an episode list, press and hold the episode or tap its More (…) button, then choose Remove Download. Depending on the list, swiping left on the episode may also reveal the removal option. This deletes the offline copy from the device; it does not unfollow the show or cancel billing. The available command can differ if an episode is saved, played, or otherwise in your Library.

Automatically remove played downloads
- Open Settings > Apps > Podcasts.
- Turn on Remove Played Downloads.
Apple documents automatic removal of played downloads 24 hours after playback. Actual behavior can depend on the episode’s status, settings, and software version. You can also adjust this setting for an individual show. See Apple’s iPhone download settings and iPad download settings.
Stop automatic downloads
To stop downloads for all followed shows, go to Settings > Apps > Podcasts > Automatically Download and choose Off. To change one show, open Podcasts > Library > Shows, touch and hold the show, tap Settings > Automatically Download, then choose a limit or Off. Depending on the controls shown, you can limit downloads to a number of recent episodes or a time period, or choose all new episodes. Use Download Video to control video downloads. Turning off automatic downloads does not necessarily remove files already on the device; remove existing episodes separately.
Automatic downloads may also be affected by network access and device state. Apple says Low Power Mode pauses background automatic downloads. Its creator guidance describes a pause for a followed show that has not been played for more than 15 days and whose latest five episodes have not been played; this is an automatic-download rule, not evidence that a paid subscription ended. If downloads stop unexpectedly, check the global and per-show settings, network or cellular restrictions, and Low Power Mode. To resume a paused show, open it from Library > Shows, tap Resume Automatic Downloads, then Turn On Automatic Downloads. Details are in Apple’s automatic-download guidance.

Add a private podcast feed by URL
A creator or membership provider may give you a private RSS feed instead of connecting access through Apple. To add it:
- Open Podcasts > Library and tap More (…).
- Choose Add a Show by URL.
- Paste the feed address supplied by the provider into Podcast URL, then tap Follow.
The feed remains available while its URL is valid and active. A private feed is not necessarily an Apple-billed subscription: billing, cancellation, and refunds are handled by the provider. It may not appear in Search or recommendations, and Family Sharing may not be available; the feed can also have limits on how content, playback, or sharing works. Apple explains this private RSS workflow and its limitations.
Connect a subscription bought through another service
If the show or channel supports account connection for an eligible subscription bought through another app or provider, find it in Podcasts and tap Already a Subscriber?, then follow the sign-in or connection steps. This connects access; it does not necessarily transfer billing to Apple. Contact the original provider for cancellation or account help. Apple describes the process in its subscription guidance.

Sync your podcast Library across iPhone and iPad
- Sign in to the same Apple Account on both devices.
- On iOS 18 or iPadOS 18 and later, open Settings > Apps > Podcasts and turn on Sync Library on each device.
Apple says Sync Library keeps followed shows, channel subscriptions, stations, and playback position in sync on supported Apple devices. If the Libraries differ, confirm the account and setting on both devices, check the network connection, update iOS or iPadOS, and allow time for the Library to refresh. A removed local download and a followed show are separate: deleting an offline copy is not the same as removing the show from the Library. See Apple’s Sync Library guidance.
Quick fixes for common problems
