After Steve: How Apple Became a Trillion-Dollar Company and Lost Its Soul is a substantial account of Apple’s leadership transition from the final years of Steve Jobs through Jony Ive’s departure in 2019. Tripp Mickle’s central contrast—Tim Cook’s operational and financial success against Ive’s design-led idealism—makes for a compelling corporate history, but “lost its soul” is an interpretation, not a proven verdict. The book is recommended for readers interested in Apple’s internal politics and management; its executive-heavy focus makes it less useful as a comprehensive history of the company or its wider effects.
What is After Steve about?
Tripp Mickle, a technology reporter associated with The Wall Street Journal and later The New York Times, follows Apple through the succession era: from the period surrounding Jobs’s death in 2011 to Ive’s departure from the company in 2019. It is not a Steve Jobs biography or a general history of Apple. Its main subject is how Cook and Ive, two very different leaders, shaped the company after Jobs.
William Morrow published the 512-page print edition in 2022. Apple Books lists an audiobook edition released May 3, 2022, with a runtime of 14 hours and 42 minutes. Its description says Mickle spoke with more than 200 current and former Apple executives and other people connected to the company. The San Francisco Chronicle’s review and Apple Books’ listing provide those edition and reporting details.
What is the book’s argument?
Mickle’s account contrasts the product- and design-centered culture associated with Jobs and Ive with the operational discipline Cook brought to Apple. In this framing, Cook expanded the business through supply-chain management, scale, margins and recurring revenue, while Ive embodied a design culture that became less central to the company’s day-to-day decisions. The book argues that Apple grew enormously while losing some of the creative identity associated with its founder.

That argument depends on what counts as success. Apple’s growth under Cook is real; whether its products, culture or influence became less distinctive is a different, more subjective question. The title’s “soul” is Mickle’s interpretive lens, not a business metric. The strongest way to read the book is as a reported case for one view of Apple’s transition, rather than a neutral measurement of the company’s creative health.
How does it portray Cook and Ive?
Tim Cook: scale and operational command
Cook emerges as an operations specialist and politically skilled executive, focused on manufacturing, inventory, margins and the systems that let Apple serve a vast market. The book’s tension is not simply that Cook succeeded where Jobs would have failed, or that he traded all innovation for profit. Rather, it asks what happens when a company’s center of gravity shifts from a founder’s product instincts toward the management of an enormous business.
Jony Ive: design ambition and distance
Ive is presented as Jobs’s closest creative partner and a designer associated with products including the iPod, iPad, MacBook Air, iMac G3 and iPhone. Mickle’s narrative also tracks his growing distance from Apple’s daily operations and his eventual departure. Ive’s aesthetic instincts are not treated as an unqualified virtue: the book’s account of Apple Park, including its glass walls and the later use of black stickers, illustrates the friction between visual ideals and practical use. The Chronicle review highlights that example.

The Cook-versus-Ive framework is vivid and useful, but it can make a vast organization look like the product of two personalities. Apple’s outcomes also depend on teams, suppliers, customers and institutional choices that receive less attention in this framing.

Which episodes make the reporting most valuable?
The Apple Watch
The Watch is treated as one of Ive’s major post-Jobs product challenges, including internal disagreement over what the device should be and how it should be designed. The episode is valuable because it puts the book’s larger question—how a design-led organization makes decisions without Jobs—inside a concrete product story.
Apple Park
The headquarters becomes more than a building project: it stands for Apple’s appetite for design perfection, the expense of that ambition and the practical problems that can follow when aesthetics dominate ordinary use. The glass-wall anecdote is memorable, though an anecdote about a headquarters cannot by itself establish how the entire company worked.

Forstall, the Apple Car and Ive’s exit
The book also adds reported material about the final period of iOS chief Scott Forstall, Apple’s early automotive ambitions and Ive’s withdrawal before leaving in 2019. These strands broaden the succession story beyond the two central figures, even as they remain subordinate to it. 9to5Mac’s review discusses the book’s coverage of the Watch, Forstall, the Car project and the 2011–2019 scope.
Services and recurring revenue
Cook’s Apple is also shown moving toward services and recurring monetization from its installed base of devices. That shift supports Mickle’s argument about changing priorities, but it is not by itself evidence of creative decline: a company can broaden its business model while continuing to improve products.
How convincing and balanced is it?
The reporting scale is a major strength: Apple’s secrecy makes a deeply sourced account of its internal leadership transition valuable. But access journalism has limits. Current and former executives may have factional loyalties, personal grievances or reputations to defend. A large number of sources does not automatically make every account representative, and stories about offices, taste or executive behavior can be illuminating without describing the whole organization.

One audiobook reader review questioned whether the account leaned toward sources sympathetic to Ive and judged Cook more harshly. That is a reader’s impression, not proof of bias. A more substantial criticism comes from the San Francisco Chronicle, which praised the reporting but found the book “myopic”: its focus on Cook and Ive leaves relatively little room for workers beyond the executive circle, customers, factory and supply-chain consequences, or Apple’s environmental and social effects.
This is the book’s central trade-off. Concentrating on two leaders yields a clear, readable succession narrative, but risks mistaking a leadership story for a complete explanation of Apple. It offers substantial detail about what senior figures did and how their priorities differed; it is narrower on how those priorities affected the people who make, use and live with Apple products.

It makes the case, but does not settle it. The argument is strongest when it connects Ive’s reduced involvement, the company’s emphasis on operational and financial performance, and the absence—during the period covered—of a new device category with the cultural force of the iPhone. Those points support a debate about whether Apple became less product-driven.

They do not prove that the company stopped innovating. Operational excellence can be innovation of a different kind; the Watch and services represent strategic evolution even if neither carried the iPhone’s cultural significance. Nor is it self-evident that an organization serving a vast global customer base should remain organized around a singular creative authority. The book’s phrase “lost its soul” ultimately asks readers to choose among competing measures: financial performance, new product categories, design quality, workplace culture, customer experience and social responsibility.
Who should read it?
- Strong fit: Readers of corporate history, Apple history and executive succession stories, especially those curious about Cook, Ive, Apple Park and the company’s internal culture.
- Qualified fit: General technology readers interested in the tension between creative ambition and organizational scale. The Cook-Ive story also works as a broader management question about what happens to a founder-shaped company after the founder is gone.
- Less suitable: Readers seeking a full Jobs biography, a technical history of Apple products, a broad account of labor or environmental impacts, or a current history of Apple after 2019.
The print edition is the more practical choice for readers who want to annotate or quickly revisit episodes; the audiobook is a substantial narrative option for listeners who prefer that format. The listed runtime and print length are format details, not evidence that either version offers a different argument.
Verdict
After Steve is a valuable, extensively reported account of Apple’s post-Jobs leadership transition, with its best material in the tensions among Cook’s operational strengths, Ive’s design ambitions and the institution they both helped shape. Its “lost its soul” thesis is provocative but narrower and more subjective than the title suggests. Read it for the inside account of succession and corporate culture, not as the definitive or fully balanced history of Apple after Jobs.
