From January to March 2024, CHZZK’s monthly hours watched more than doubled and its active channels grew eightfold, while Korean-language viewing across Twitch, CHZZK and SOOP fell 18%. Those figures, based on StreamElements and Streams Charts data reported by GamesBeat, show that CHZZK benefited substantially—but that the measured market also contracted.
Why Twitch left South Korea
Twitch announced on December 5, 2023, that it would end its South Korean business on February 27, 2024, Korea Standard Time. This was a country-specific exit, not a global shutdown. Twitch said that operating in Korea had become unsustainable: its network fees were about 10 times higher than in most other countries, and the business was running at a significant loss. Those are Twitch’s stated reasons, not an independently verified breakdown of its costs.
Before announcing the exit, Twitch had tried to reduce delivery costs by experimenting with peer-to-peer streaming and limiting maximum source quality to 720p. The company said those measures did not create a sustainable path forward. Its explanation and the shutdown date are set out in Twitch’s announcement.
What CHZZK is—and why its timing mattered
CHZZK is Naver’s Korean livestreaming service, initially focused on gaming and creators. It opened its beta on December 19, 2023, shortly before Twitch’s departure. That timing gave creators and viewers a domestic option during a compressed period when they had to decide where to broadcast and watch. CHZZK was one major destination, alongside SOOP, YouTube and other social or community services; calling it a complete replacement for Twitch overstates what the evidence establishes.

Naver’s familiarity and domestic presence may have helped lower the friction of trying a new local service. But the reported growth coincided with two forces: an early-stage platform gaining users and a sudden migration opportunity created by Twitch’s exit. The available figures do not isolate how much growth came from each.
What the reported surge looked like
GamesBeat reported StreamElements and Streams Charts measurements for Korean-language streaming activity in the first quarter of 2024. The figures capture viewing and channel activity, not revenue or profitability.

| Measure | Reported result | What it tells us |
|---|---|---|
| Korean-language hours watched across Twitch, CHZZK and SOOP | Down 18% from January to March 2024 | The measured audience pool shrank even as platforms competed for viewers. |
| SOOP hours watched | Up 6.6% quarter over quarter in Q1 2024 | SOOP also held up and grew during the transition. |
| CHZZK monthly hours watched | More than doubled between January and March 2024 | Viewing activity rose rapidly on the new platform. |
| CHZZK active channels | Increased eightfold over the same period | More channels were active; this does not mean unique professional creators increased eightfold. |
The source article was published on April 23, 2024, and updated on June 18, 2025. Its underlying growth figures concern January–March 2024, not CHZZK’s current standing. The measurements do not establish a precise share of Twitch’s former audience, nor do hours watched reveal how much creators earned.
Why a growing platform can coexist with a shrinking market
When an incumbent leaves, viewers do not necessarily transfer one-for-one to a successor. Some stop watching live, some follow a creator to another service, and others divide their viewing across platforms. The 18% decline across the three measured services is therefore compatible with CHZZK’s rapid growth: CHZZK could gain a larger amount of activity while the combined pool became smaller.

That makes SOOP important to the story. GamesBeat describes SOOP and CHZZK as the principal domestic contenders for displaced Twitch creators and viewers. SOOP’s reported 6.6% quarter-over-quarter increase suggests the transition strengthened more than one local competitor; it was not a CHZZK-only handoff. The figures do not prove that every former Twitch creator moved to either service.
What the move meant for creators and viewers
Creators had to rebuild more than a broadcast schedule
A move between platforms can mean rebuilding follower habits and community routines, as well as adapting chat moderation, emotes, alerts, overlays and discovery. Creators also have to assess whether a new service can support their audience, monetization needs and sponsor visibility. The reported market data does not provide channel-by-channel migration rates or comparable income figures, so it cannot show whether creators were financially better off after moving.

The effect is unlikely to be identical for every channel. A prominent streamer may bring an established audience to a new service; a smaller creator who relied on platform discovery may find it harder to recreate that reach. Broadcasting on multiple services can reduce reliance on one platform, but it also adds operational work and may fragment a community.
Viewers had to follow people, not just a brand
For viewers, switching services can require a new account and adjustment to different chat, moderation and discovery conventions. A favorite creator may broadcast in a new place—or split activity between services—so platform loyalty and loyalty to an individual channel are not the same thing. The available figures do not establish specific current CHZZK features, availability, latency or archive capabilities.

What the early data can—and cannot—prove
The Q1 2024 measurements support a clear conclusion: CHZZK was an early beneficiary of Twitch’s South Korean exit. They do not show that it permanently dominated the market, replaced all of Twitch’s audience, improved creator earnings or became a major international competitor.
- Viewing is not revenue. Hours watched do not establish platform profitability, advertising demand, creator payouts or creator welfare.
- Channel counts are not unique people. An eightfold increase in active channels is not evidence of an equal increase in unique or professional creators.
- A launch-period spike is not retention. The reported January–March comparison is short and overlaps with both CHZZK’s early growth and Twitch’s exit. It does not show whether viewers or creators stayed over the long term.
- A plan is not a completed expansion. GamesBeat reported that CHZZK and SOOP planned English-language or global launches during 2024, with CHZZK’s rollout described as still in beta. That report does not verify a launch date, supported countries, international user numbers or meaningful adoption outside Korea.
- 2024 is not a 2026 market ranking. These figures cannot establish CHZZK’s position in August 2026; a current ranking would require later, comparable data.
The industry lesson: creators need portability
Twitch’s stated reason for leaving highlights how local infrastructure economics can constrain a global platform. A service may be viable in most markets yet unsustainable in one where delivery costs differ sharply. For domestic competitors, a sudden exit can create an opening—but converting a migration into durable market power depends on keeping creators and viewers after the disruption passes.
For creators, the broader risk is dependence on any single platform’s infrastructure, policies and discovery system. Maintaining direct ways to reach an audience—through social channels, communities or other contact points—can make a forced move less costly. Multi-platform distribution may help, but it is not friction-free and does not guarantee that an audience will follow everywhere.
CHZZK’s early surge was real, and Twitch’s departure created the conditions for it. The same data shows a shrinking measured viewing pool and a viable competitor in SOOP. The evidence describes a consequential market transition in early 2024, not a coronation or a verified account of the market today.
