It lets eligible users share Spotify content and chat in one-to-one conversations or groups of up to 10, but it is not an open social network or a replacement for WhatsApp, Instagram, or texting. Spotify began rolling it out on mobile to Free and Premium users aged 16 and older in select markets on August 26, 2025.
What Spotify Messages does
Messages keeps a conversation alongside the Spotify content that prompted it. Users can share songs, playlists, albums, podcast episodes, audiobooks, artists, live events, and countdown pages, then add text or react with emojis. Spotify’s current Messages support page lists those shareable items and documents the mobile controls.
The feature started as one-to-one chat. Spotify later added group conversations, Listening Activity, and Request to Jam. As of Spotify’s June 17, 2026 update, Listening Activity is also available in group messaging.
Who can use it—and who can you message?
Spotify announced Messages on August 26, 2025, for Free and Premium users aged 16 and older in select markets on mobile. That was a phased rollout, not a promise of access in every country or account. Spotify’s support page is also labeled for mobile; desktop and web messaging are not established by these official sources.

Messages is not a directory for contacting any Spotify account. Suggested people may include users with whom you have previously exchanged Spotify content, made a Blend or collaborative playlist, joined a Jam, or shared a Family or Duo plan. If someone is not suggested, Spotify says you can send them an invite link through another app; after they open it, they may appear in your Spotify suggestions.
Spotify’s January 7, 2026 announcement said nearly 40 million users had sent nearly 340 million messages since launch. Those are Spotify-reported figures, not independently audited measurements. The same update introduced Listening Activity and Request to Jam; see Spotify’s announcement.

How to send a message
Share Spotify content from its page
- Open the song, playlist, album, podcast, audiobook, artist, event, or other supported item.
- Tap Share.
- Select one or more suggested recipients. Spotify’s support page says you can select up to 10 people in the sharing flow.
- Send the item, adding text where available.
Start a chat from Messages
- Open the Spotify mobile app and tap your profile picture.
- Under Messages, tap New message.
- Select a suggested person and send the first message.
For a first-time contact, the recipient may receive a request and can accept, block, or delete it. Full conversation features are available after acceptance.
How group chats work
- Tap your profile picture, then scroll to Messages.
- Tap Create group and choose friends.
- Tap Create group again to confirm.
Spotify’s current support documentation sets a limit of 10 friends per group, and the person who creates it becomes its administrator. Members who leave or are removed do not see messages sent while they were away, according to Spotify’s support page.

Listening Activity and Request to Jam
Listening Activity is an opt-in way to show what you are currently listening to in Messages. Spotify says users can use activity in a conversation to discover what friends are playing. Its June 17, 2026 update extended Listening Activity to group messaging.
Request to Jam makes it easier to turn a conversation into a shared listening session. Spotify’s January 2026 announcement describes the feature as available to users aged 16 and older with Messages access in enabled markets. A Free user can join a Jam hosted by a Premium user in person; that does not make Premium a requirement for ordinary Messages access.

Requests, blocking, reporting, and turning Messages off
Recipients can accept, block, or delete a first-contact request. Spotify also documents controls to block someone from a chat or profile, report a message by pressing and holding it and selecting Report, and manage blocked accounts at Settings and privacy > Privacy and social > Blocked users.
To disable Messages, Spotify’s current documented mobile path is:

- Tap your profile picture.
- Tap Settings and privacy.
- Select Privacy and social.
- Scroll to Social features and switch Messages off.
Labels and layout can vary with app version, operating system, account, and rollout status.

Spotify’s August 26, 2025 launch announcement said conversations were protected by encryption in transit and at rest and described detection technology for certain unlawful or harmful content. It also said moderators may review reported content. However, Spotify’s current support page says: “Spotify Messages are private between participants but are not encrypted.”
Those statements conflict. The current support wording does not support calling Messages end-to-end encrypted, and readers should not assume Spotify cannot access messages. For the latest interpretation, consult Spotify’s current support documentation alongside the launch announcement.
Does Messages make Spotify a social network?
It adds social features, but Spotify’s stated purpose is narrower: keep sharing and conversation about music, podcasts, audiobooks, and other Spotify content inside the app. Relationship-based suggestions, request approval, and private group chats make it a chat layer around listening—not a public feed or unrestricted messaging directory.

Spotify has also said Messages complements existing sharing through services such as WhatsApp, Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok. The practical choice depends on the recipient and conversation:

If Messages is missing or a friend does not appear
- A person is missing from suggestions: You may not have shared content or participated together in a Blend, Jam, collaborative playlist, or Family or Duo plan. Spotify’s suggested workaround is to send an invite link through another app.
- The Messages option is absent: Access may not have reached your account or market; you may be below the age threshold, using an unsupported platform, or have Messages turned off in privacy settings. Spotify’s official sources do not provide a single current global availability list.
- A first message does not open a full chat: The recipient may need to accept the message request first.
