That date is now in the past: the next Spring Festival began on February 17, 2026, welcoming the Year of the Horse. This guide looks back at what the 2025 celebration marked and how Spring Festival is observed in China, where customs differ by region and family.
When was Chinese New Year 2025?
Chinese New Year 2025 began on January 29, the first day of the Chinese lunar calendar year associated with the Snake. China’s government news service and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) both identified that date as the start of the new year. The date of Spring Festival changes on the Gregorian calendar, so it does not fall on January 29 every year. Xinhua’s 2025 guide and FAO Director-General QU Dongyu’s January 2025 remarks give the date.
The next Spring Festival began on February 17, 2026, marking the Year of the Horse, according to the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government’s 2026 guide. The 2025 Snake-year countdown is therefore historical, not a current countdown.
What is Spring Festival, and how long does it last?
In China, Chinese New Year is commonly called Spring Festival. It is not just a single day: preparations begin before New Year’s Eve, and celebrations continue through the Lantern Festival on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month. In December 2024, UNESCO added “Spring Festival, the social practices of the Chinese people in celebration of the traditional new year” to its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The inscription recognized an established living tradition; it did not mark the festival’s beginning. Xinhua’s guide describes the observances and the UNESCO inscription.

Spring Festival is one of several New Year celebrations observed across Asia and around the world. Traditions and calendars vary between countries and communities, so Chinese Spring Festival customs should not be treated as a single set of practices shared by everyone who celebrates a lunar-calendar new year.
How do people celebrate Spring Festival in China?
Before New Year’s Eve
Preparations can include cleaning the home, buying new clothes, preparing food, and decorating with red couplets, paper-cut window decorations, and New Year posters. Xinhua’s guide also describes Laba Festival and Little New Year as earlier points in the seasonal lead-up. It places Little New Year on the 23rd day of the twelfth lunar month in northern China and the 24th in southern China—one example of regional variation.
New Year’s Eve
For many families, the reunion dinner is a central occasion, bringing relatives together if circumstances allow. Some stay up late to welcome the new year. Firecrackers are part of the traditional picture described in the government guide, but whether they are used in a particular place depends on local rules and customs.

New Year’s Day and the days that follow
People may exchange greetings and visit relatives, neighbors, and friends. Red envelopes are commonly given by older family members to younger generations. Public celebrations can include temple fairs, folk performances, and lantern displays. The guide presents these as Chinese Spring Festival practices, not universal customs among all Lunar New Year celebrations.

Food and family-visit traditions are not uniform across China. A Shanghai municipal guide offers examples from the city: its reunion-dinner dishes include meatballs, egg dumplings, and eight-treasure rice, and the second day of the new year is traditionally a time for married daughters and their husbands to visit the wife’s family. These are local examples rather than rules for every household. Shanghai’s 2025 guide describes these customs.
A later Shanghai guide notes a broader north–south food contrast: families in northern China typically eat dumplings, while those in southern China often eat glutinous rice balls and rice cakes. It also says Spring Festival visits can extend through the first 15 days. These are broad tendencies, not a menu or schedule followed by every family. The 2026 Shanghai guide gives those examples.

What does the Snake symbolize?
Interpretations of the Snake’s meaning depend on the speaker and context. In a January 2025 New Year reception statement, FAO Director-General QU Dongyu described the Year of the Snake as representing “opportunities for life-changing transformation and a rebirth” as well as resilience and the ability to overcome challenges. That is QU’s characterization of the year’s symbolism, not a claim that every person or community shares one interpretation. Read QU’s statement.
In a video message quoted by the Chinese government’s January 2025 guide, UN Secretary-General António Guterres connected qualities attributed to the snake with a call to “renew our commitment to peace, equality, and justice.” His remarks were a message for the occasion, not a universal definition of the animal’s place in Chinese culture. The guide includes the message.

At a January 2025 reception, QU Dongyu said that 25 percent of the world’s population celebrates Spring Festival. The speech did not provide a calculation or dataset for the figure, so it is best understood as the FAO Director-General’s attributed estimate rather than an independently validated statistic. FAO’s published remarks contain the statement.
