Corey Graves criticized the chair shot Mark Briscoe delivered to a handcuffed Jack Perry during AEW Dynamite’s Blood & Guts main event on July 24, 2024. Graves, a WWE broadcast commentator, warned that wrestlers must protect themselves and one another, drawing on his own experience with headshots. Reports said the chair was modified, but Perry’s restraint meant he could not raise his hands to shield himself.
What happened to Jack Perry at Blood & Guts?
During the Team AEW versus The Elite main event on the July 24, 2024 episode of AEW Dynamite, Perry was handcuffed to the cage when Briscoe struck him in the head with a chair. Contemporary reports described it as an unprotected chair shot: because Perry was restrained, he could not bring his hands up to protect himself.

That description concerns Perry’s ability to shield himself, not necessarily the construction of the chair. Reports separately said the chair was gimmicked or shaved down. They did not provide technical details establishing how much the modification reduced the impact or made the spot safe.
What did Corey Graves say about the chair shot?

“This is not meant to sound judgmental, or incite ‘us vs. them’ or question anybody’s passion, or talent or intentions. This is just coming from a guy whose career ended from a few too many ACCIDENTAL headshots. The ART of this business is protecting ourselves and each other. Trust me… the gaps in memory are not worth it. I promise.”
The post was reported as deleted, so the quoted text comes from contemporary coverage reproducing it rather than an original post that remains available. Graves framed his concern as a warning about protecting performers, not as an accusation about anyone’s intentions.

Was the chair gimmicked?
Yes, according to reports, though accounts used different descriptions: one said the chair was shaved down, while another said it was gimmicked. Those reports do not settle the safety question. A modified prop and a performer’s ability to protect himself are separate issues; Perry was handcuffed and could not use his hands to shield his head.
The available reporting does not establish the chair’s precise design, the amount of force involved, or the physical risk of the spot. It is therefore not possible to conclude from the prop description alone that the shot was harmless—or to quantify its danger.

Nick Jackson’s account
AEW executive Nick Jackson told Sports Illustrated, in comments quoted by Wrestling Inc., that Perry was fine and that the spot would not have happened if Perry had not been prepared. The same Wrestling Inc. report said multiple AEW contacts confirmed the chair was gimmicked.
Tony Khan’s comments
On an ROH media call, AEW CEO Tony Khan said he preferred to leave some of wrestling’s art and mechanics unexplained and that spots differ. F4W/Wrestling Observer summarized Khan as standing behind AEW wrestlers’ health following violent matches; Wrestling Inc. also reported his comments. Neither account establishes the exact physical risk of this particular shot.

How does the incident fit AEW’s earlier chair-shot history?
Cageside Seats and Wrestling Inc. placed the controversy alongside earlier AEW chair-shot incidents. In 2019, Cody Rhodes was cut during a gimmicked-chair spot. Coverage later said AEW had stopped using unprotected chair shots and referred to a purported 2023 internal list that prohibited them. Wrestling Inc. questioned whether that document was official and noted that some of its listed prohibitions appeared inconsistent with AEW programming.
That history should be treated as reported context, not confirmation of a current, verified AEW policy. The public accounts leave important details of the Blood & Guts spot undisclosed.
