The family memorial says he passed away in his sleep. The AP also reported that circumstance, attributing it to Mangione’s attorney, Peter S. Matorin. Neither source identifies a medical cause of death.
What was Chuck Mangione known for?
A jazz career spanning decades
Mangione was a jazz musician, flugelhorn player, and composer. His family’s memorial describes a 60-year career and more than 30 albums. He began performing as a teenager with his brother, pianist Gap Mangione, in the Jazz Brothers. He later studied at the Eastman School of Music, taught there, and helped start its Eastman Jazz program.

Released in 1977, “Feels So Good” brought Mangione broad popular success. The AP reports that the song reached No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped the adult contemporary chart.
