The result is uneven rather than an outright failure: the Gaikwad family’s power struggle and the performances—especially Priya Bapat and Divya Seth Shah—remain compelling, even as the plotting strains to keep producing surprises.
What happens in City of Dreams season 3?
The season begins after the death of Poornima Gaikwad’s young son. Poornima disappears, and her father, Ameya, sends Wasim Khan to find her. The search leads to Bangkok; Poornima’s return brings her back into the family’s political orbit and into conflict with her father, Jagdish and Vibha. The family’s grief and shifting loyalties provide the emotional stakes for a contest over political power.
Does the political drama work?
It is the season’s strongest strand. Deepa Gahlot’s Scroll.in review finds the political tug-of-war more involving than the surrounding subplots, particularly the verbal duels between Poornima and Vibha. Horse-trading and family rivalry give the story a clear source of tension: who will control the Gaikwad legacy, and at what cost?
That focus is also where the season’s potential is most visible. Poornima and Ameya’s relationship makes political choices personal, while the confrontations between Poornima and Vibha turn power struggles into character drama. When the series stays with those conflicts, it has a sharper purpose than simply springing another surprise.

Why does the season feel overextended?
Scroll’s central criticism is structural: the season keeps spreading its attention rather than building momentum around the Gaikwad contest. An anti-drugs task force, a drug mule’s romance and a collection of outsized supporting characters add more narrative lanes, but do not all deepen the central conflict. Returning characters can feel like padding, and the accumulation of side stories makes the shocks less effective.
The Times of India review also notes that the series tries several modes and leaves some threads loose, though it still recommends the father-daughter story. OTTplay similarly describes an engaging season that runs somewhat long. These are not complaints that every subplot fails; they point to a loss of focus and a sense that the story could have done more with less.

How strong are the performances?
The cast helps keep the season watchable even when the plotting wanders. Scroll singles out Priya Bapat and Atul Kulkarni for assured performances, and also praises Sachin Pilgaonkar and Divya Seth Shah. The Times of India and OTTplay likewise highlight the performances, with Bapat and Kulkarni among the names called out. Eijaz Khan also receives praise in the Times of India review.
Bapat gives Poornima’s grief and political resolve a common emotional foundation, while the sharper exchanges with Vibha bring out the stakes in the family’s contest. Shah’s performance makes Vibha a notable presence; for Scroll, the character is compelling enough that a further season centered on her would be worth watching. That is a critical response, not confirmation that another season is planned.

Do reviewers agree on the ending?
No. Scroll’s review is sharply critical of the scattered plotting and leaves open the possibility of a fourth season. By contrast, News India Times calls the finale chilling and treats season 3 as a finite conclusion after three seasons and 29 episodes. That outlet’s interpretation should not be taken as an official announcement that the series has ended. The reviews reflect different judgments about whether the finale feels like closure, not a verified production decision.
The outlets’ ratings also show how much the response varies. The Times of India rated the season 3.0/5 in 2023; OTTplay’s Sunidhi Prajapat gave it 3.5/5 that year; News India Times’ Rajiv Vijayakar awarded four-and-a-half stars in June 2023. These are individual critics’ ratings, not a combined score or audience consensus.

Who is likely to enjoy season 3?
- Watch for the political contest: The Poornima–Vibha rivalry and the Gaikwad family’s struggle for power are the season’s most rewarding material.
- Expect a crowded narrative: Crime, romance and supporting-character threads compete with the central family drama, and some viewers may find that sprawl distracting.
- Value the acting: The performances are a consistent strength across reviews, even among critics who find the season long or uneven.
- Do not assume a definitive series status: Critics disagree about whether the finale closes the story, and the reviews do not establish whether a season 4 is confirmed.
