Chris Hemsworth and Anya Taylor-Joy appeared in Sydney with director George Miller to promote Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, with DNEG Sydney identifying the State Theatre as the venue for the film’s local debut. The Sydney event came before the film’s official out-of-competition gala screening at the Cannes Film Festival on 15 May 2024.
What happened at the Sydney event?
The Sydney appearance brought Hemsworth, Taylor-Joy and Miller together ahead of the film’s Australian release. DNEG Sydney, whose team worked on the film’s visual effects, described the State Theatre event as the film’s Sydney debut. Its account says the event took place the night before the Cannes premiere, but does not give an exact Sydney date.
That distinction matters: the Sydney gathering was a local debut and promotional appearance, while Cannes announced the film’s out-of-competition gala as its world-premiere screening. The festival scheduled that screening for 15 May 2024 in the Grand Théâtre Lumière at the Palais des Festivals.
Why the film mattered to Hemsworth
For Hemsworth, joining Miller’s Mad Max world carried a personal significance. Speaking to ABC News on 1 May 2024, he said: “Look, as an Australian, as an Australian actor, I think to be a part of a George Miller film, a Mad Max film, was always a dream come true.”
