Capcom says it is focusing on reactivating dormant game franchises, but it has not promised a comeback for every older series or named further candidates. The company made the statement on December 13, 2024, alongside announcements for an Okami sequel project and Onimusha: Way of the Sword. Since then, the Onimusha game has been released, while Capcom’s cited statements still do not identify which other franchises may return.
What Capcom said about bringing back dormant franchises
In a December 13, 2024 press release, Capcom stated: “In addition to regularly releasing major new titles each year, Capcom is focusing on re-activating dormant IPs that haven’t had a new title launch recently.”

Capcom connected that focus to its content library and the two projects announced in the same release. It said it wanted to enhance corporate value by leveraging its library, including reviving past IPs, to produce “highly efficient, high-quality titles.” This describes a company strategy—not a schedule of confirmed revivals, nor a commitment that every inactive series will get a new game.
Which franchises were announced?
Okami: a sequel project with original-team involvement
Capcom said work had begun on a new Okami project, describing it as the start of a new tale and saying it was being co-developed with the original director and members of the original development team. The announcement gave no release date. GameSpot identified the returning director as Hideki Kamiya and likewise noted that Capcom had not provided a release window in its December 16, 2024 report. The original Okami was released in 2006, according to Capcom’s announcement.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword: announced, then released
Capcom announced Onimusha: Way of the Sword as the first new title in the series in over 20 years. In a September 7, 2026 press release, the company said the game had released on September 4, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
Capcom reported worldwide sales of more than one million units on launch day and cumulative sales of more than ten million units for the Onimusha series. These are figures reported by Capcom; the cited announcement does not describe them as independently audited. They establish the reported performance of this particular release and series, not a general forecast for other dormant franchises.

Which Capcom franchises are coming back next?
Capcom’s cited announcements do not name additional franchises under consideration. The September 2026 release statement repeats the company’s focus on reactivating IPs without a recent new-title launch, but it does not add candidates. Inven Global also reported in September 2026 that Capcom had not disclosed which IPs it was considering, while ComicBook.com’s franchise suggestions are speculation rather than confirmed plans.
That distinction matters when interpreting lists of possible returns. Dino Crisis, Ace Attorney, Breath of Fire, and other fan-requested series should not be described as coming back unless Capcom makes an announcement confirming them. The available statements support the broad strategy and the two named projects—not a ranked list or timetable for future revivals.
