For most viewers, a good place to start is near the horizontal center of the auditorium, in the middle-to-rear section. Treat that as a rule of thumb, not a universal row number: screen size and height, room layout, sightlines, and your comfort can all change the best choice.
Why the middle-to-rear center is a useful starting point
A seat near the centerline avoids the sharp side angle of an outer seat, while the middle-to-rear area is less likely than the front rows to make a large screen feel overwhelming. It is a practical balance between immersion and a more relaxed view—not a guarantee that every auditorium’s center seat has the best view or sound.
Distance and screen height matter together. If you sit very close to a tall screen, you may find yourself looking upward or moving your gaze across a large image. Farther back can feel more comfortable, but the last rows may feel less immersive. The right balance depends on the room and on how large you want the screen to feel.
How to choose from the actual seat map
Use the map for the specific auditorium rather than relying on row letters or advice from another cinema. Row A could be close to the screen in one room and much farther away in another. Before booking, check where the screen is, how many rows there are, whether the front section is unusually close, and where aisles or accessible spaces sit.

- Horizontal position: Prefer a seat near the centerline if you want to avoid an extreme side angle.
- Distance and vertical view: Consider whether the screen will feel comfortably sized and whether its top edge might require sustained head tilt.
- Obstructions: Look for seats with a clear view past people or structures ahead; elevation and the row layout can affect sightlines.
- Entry and exit: An aisle seat may be the better choice if easier access matters more than a perfectly centered position.
Adjust the position to your preference
For a more relaxed view
Try a seat farther back, still near the centerline. This can make a very large screen feel less intense and may reduce the amount of upward viewing, depending on the auditorium’s layout.
For greater immersion
Move closer if you want the screen to occupy more of your field of view. Avoid choosing a front row by default: a close seat can be tiring for some viewers, particularly when the screen is tall or the viewing angle feels steep.

For access and personal comfort
Prioritize an aisle, companion space, or another location that makes entering, leaving, or sitting comfortably easier. The best seat is not useful if reaching it or staying in it is difficult for you.
What THX’s 36-degree guidance does—and does not—mean
THX’s screen-placement guidance is for cinema designers, not a prescription for an individual patron’s row. On its page dated December 22, 2016, THX advises designers to accommodate a 36-degree horizontal viewing angle from the farthest seat, describing it as a way to provide a broad field of view and wide listening space. That 36-degree figure describes auditorium design; it does not identify a universal sweet spot for viewers or prove that a particular row is best. A room’s screen position, shape, rake, sightlines, and seat map all affect the choice. Format-specific row recommendations should be followed only when they are supported for the particular auditorium.

A 2003 U.S. Department of Justice filing discusses historical SMPTE EG 18-1994 sightline material, including a 35-degree limit from horizontal to the top of a projected image and a normal sightline around 15 degrees below horizontal.
