The Legend of Ochi follows Yuri, a shy farm girl on the fictional island of Carpathia, who has been taught to fear the elusive ochi. When she finds an injured baby, she sets out to reunite it with its family. The creature work is a major part of the appeal: the production used physical puppets and animatronics alongside matte paintings, practical effects and digital work, giving the fantasy both a tactile center and a larger-than-life world.
A rescue quest about unlearning fear
Written and directed by Isaiah Saxon, the 2025 A24 film centers on a simple, emotionally legible choice: Yuri can keep treating the ochi as a threat, or respond to the vulnerable creature in front of her. Her journey to return the baby home turns the fantasy adventure into a story about curiosity, compassion and challenging an inherited fear of what is unfamiliar.
The premise does not depend on elaborate mythology to make its stakes clear. A wounded animal needs help, and Yuri must decide whether she trusts what she has been taught or what she is learning through contact. That gives the film a family-fantasy shape, even as its atmosphere and creature encounters can be unsettling.
Why the puppets feel present
The baby ochi was not created solely as a digital image. The production built three Baby Ochi versions for different scenes and purposes, and nearly 40 artists and technicians worked on the creature, according to the Los Angeles Times. Early movement tests used rods; the finished work also involved detailed animatronics and multiple puppeteers.

That physical performance matters because small irregularities can make a creature feel like a living presence rather than a perfectly smoothed effect. The puppet has weight, occupies the same space as the actors and can respond through movement on set. The filmmakers drew on real primates, including the golden snub-nosed monkey, as references for the design. Saxon told the Los Angeles Times, “The goal was that it felt like it was something from nature, not something from a movie.”
The mechanics also shaped how scenes could be made. The team rehearsed movement and planned camera positions and set construction around the operators’ working space. Lead puppeteer Robert Tygner recalled that early collaboration with the cinematographer and production designer was “a real advantage.” In practice, that means the puppet performance was part of the filmmaking plan, not simply an element added after the live-action scenes were shot.

A handmade world completed by effects
The film’s tactile quality should not be mistaken for an all-practical production. Saxon’s A24 production note says the film took seven years to create and included more than two hundred matte paintings. The Guardian describes a mix of puppetry, matte paintings, practical effects, digital tricks and Romanian location shooting. Ape suits and animatronic design also contribute to the creature work.
Those methods serve different purposes: puppets make the ochi physically present, while paintings and digital effects can extend the environment beyond what a set or location can provide. The result is not a contest between practical and digital techniques, but a hybrid approach built around the needs of each scene. Saxon also described sets built at high elevation in Romania being eaten by bears—an attributed production anecdote that hints at the challenges of working in remote locations, rather than a measure of the film’s craft.

The film stars Helena Zengel, Finn Wolfhard, Emily Watson and Willem Dafoe. Its Romanian landscapes and carefully constructed creatures give the story an old-fashioned fantasy texture, though that does not mean the film is untouched by contemporary effects work.
What to expect from the story and tone
The film’s strongest draw for many viewers is the combination of a sympathetic rescue premise and a creature that appears to share space with its human cast. Its storytelling has been a more divisive point. Rotten Tomatoes’ listing summarizes a split reaction: impressive puppetry and visual effects lift a story some critics and viewers consider predictable. That is an aggregator’s summary, not a universal verdict; the experience will depend on whether atmosphere and creature performance matter more to you than surprise in the plot.

Viewers comparing it with films such as E.T., The NeverEnding Story or The Dark Crystal should treat those as points of comparison for mood or fantasy tradition, not as evidence of direct influence. The film’s own identity rests on Yuri’s relationship with the ochi and the unusual physicality of its creature work.
