CLICKOLDING is a dark, deliberately narrow narrative game built around repeatedly clicking a tally counter for a masked man in a hotel room. Its unease comes from making that repetitive action the center of a one-sitting story—not from offering a broad world to explore. The title’s “30 minute” framing should be read as a description of a short experience, not a guaranteed completion time: Steam calls it a one-sitting story but does not promise a specific duration. Steam’s listing also warns that the game contains suggestive language and a depiction of suicide.
What is CLICKOLDING?
CLICKOLDING is an incremental narrative game from Strange Scaffold. The setup is simple and unsettling: you are in a hotel room with a masked man who asks you to click a tally counter. The store description makes the stakes part of the premise: leaving means forfeiting the offered money, and you cannot return.
That narrow interaction is the point. Rather than framing the game around exploration or a collection of activities, it centers the player on a repeated physical-feeling action and the increasingly uncomfortable situation around it. The premise is best approached as dark narrative fiction, not as a conventional counter-clicking challenge.
Why does the short format feel so unsettling?
The counter gives the player an obvious task, while the circumstances make that task feel morally and emotionally loaded. Repetition can make a small action feel less neutral with each click: the player is not simply watching a scene unfold, but participating in the ritual the game has placed in front of them.
#1 Best Overall
That tension is what the “30 minute game” wording conveys, but it is not an official time guarantee. Steam describes the experience as a polished story intended for one sitting; the listing does not establish that every player finishes in exactly 30 minutes. The more useful expectation is a compact, self-contained session rather than a long campaign.
Content warning: suggestive language and suicide depiction
Strange Scaffold’s mature-content advisory on the Steam store page specifically identifies suggestive language and depiction of suicide. Those details are worth knowing before starting, particularly because the game’s confined setup offers little distance from its central situation. This warning describes the developer’s stated content categories; it does not substitute for a personal assessment of whether the material is right for you.

What changed after release?
An official update published August 2, 2024 added postgame dialogue, adjusted pacing in the back half of the game, and activated Twitch integration. These changes are recorded in Strange Scaffold’s update archive. They add context and streaming functionality without changing the basic premise of the counter, the hotel room, and the player’s uneasy role.

It may suit players looking for a brief, uncomfortable narrative built around a single repeated interaction, especially those interested in games that use participation to create unease. It is a poor fit if you want exploration, a wide range of mechanics, or to avoid the content identified in the developer’s advisory. Go in expecting a one-sitting story and a deliberately constrained premise, not a guaranteed half-hour runtime.
