Is The Odyssey based on Homer’s poem?
Yes. Universal presents the film as a cinematic telling of Homer’s foundational saga. Nolan, who wrote and directed the movie, described the source story this way: “It’s not a story—it’s the story.” That is his characterization of the epic’s significance, not a claim that the film reproduces every episode or detail of the poem.
For viewers who want to compare the adaptation with its source, reading Homer’s Odyssey is a useful companion. Translations differ in whether they use verse or prose, how readily they read in modern English, and how much explanatory material they provide; Universal does not identify or recommend a particular translation.

Was The Odyssey filmed entirely with IMAX cameras?
According to NBCUniversal’s May 7, 2026, account, yes: it was the first film shot entirely with IMAX cameras. The article says filming took place across multiple international locations but does not name the countries. It also quotes Nolan describing the all-IMAX approach as a “longest-held ambition.”

IMAX’s July 20, 2026, report says Nolan and cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema shot 2.1 million feet of IMAX film. IMAX also said it developed a next-generation camera, named “The Keighley,” and an accompanying sound blimp for the production. These are company-reported production details, not a description of what every theater can show.
What does “shot entirely with IMAX cameras” mean for screenings?
Production format and exhibition format are different. The camera claim describes how the movie was filmed; it does not guarantee that a local theater screens it in IMAX, or in any particular IMAX presentation format. IMAX reported that selected locations showed the film on 70mm film. Its July 20 report counted 41 such locations worldwide at that time, a historical figure that should not be treated as a current schedule or location count.

These are dated company reports, not a live box-office total. IMAX said on July 20, 2026, that the film earned $52 million worldwide in IMAX opening-weekend receipts, representing 20% of its global debut. The figures refer specifically to IMAX’s reported opening-weekend performance.
In a September 12, 2026, article, NBCUniversal said the film had passed the $1.677 billion milestone; the article’s body gave a $1.685 billion global weekend total.
