No. The proposed Cold Case reboot was reported as in development in April 2024, but TVLine reported on September 18, 2024, citing Deadline, that CBS was no longer moving forward with it. That report said CBS and Warner Bros. Television had not immediately responded to TVLine’s request for comment. The sources reviewed do not establish a newer revival announcement, so this is the latest substantiated status rather than a new official statement.

What the CBS reboot was supposed to be

The April 12, 2024 report described a new series about a different group of detectives investigating unsolved crimes. Its setting would shift from Philadelphia, where the original series took place, to the Southwest. TVLine’s development report said original creator Meredith Stiehm was attached to write and executive-produce, with Jerry Bruckheimer and KristieAnne Reed also attached as executive producers.

The development report did not establish a cast, pilot order, episode count, premiere date, or final story details. The September status report attributed the decision to drop the project to Deadline; it did not give a reason for the decision. Neither report was a primary CBS announcement.

How the proposal differed from the original series

Aspect Original Cold Case Proposed reboot
Setting Philadelphia The Southwest
Detectives A Philadelphia Police Department unit focused on unsolved cases, led by homicide detective Lilly Rush, played by Kathryn Morris A different group of detectives; no cast was reported
Status Aired for seven seasons, from 2003 to 2010 Reported in development in April 2024 and reported as not moving forward in September 2024

The original ensemble also included Danny Pino, John Finn, Jeremy Ratchford, Thom Barry, and Tracie Thoms, according to TVLine’s September 2024 report.

What is—and is not—confirmed about its status

The available reports establish a development story followed by a report that CBS had dropped the project; they do not establish why it was dropped or whether CBS or Warner Bros. Television later made a formal public statement. No substantiated cast, release date, or completed episode order was reported. It is therefore more accurate to describe the reboot as a project reported not to be moving forward as of September 18, 2024, rather than as an upcoming CBS series.

Why the original series is still part of the story

Cold Case ran on CBS from 2003 to 2010, following a Philadelphia police unit that revisited unsolved crimes. Its format gave the proposed reboot a clear point of comparison: the new version was described as retaining the focus on cold cases while changing both the location and the detective team.

For historical context only, CBS said the original was averaging 12.38 million viewers when it announced the show’s renewal for the 2008–09 season. That is a figure from CBS’s February 14, 2008 renewal release, not a current audience measure or evidence about the reboot’s prospects: CBS’s 2008 renewal announcement.
