Her announced eight-week engagement ended March 16, 2025. Escola returned to the role on April 8, 2025; Gilpin is not the production’s current Mary.
When did Betty Gilpin make her Broadway debut?
Gilpin’s first performance as Mary Todd Lincoln was January 21, 2025, at the Lyceum Theatre. The December 3, 2024, casting announcement described the part as her Broadway debut, a credit also recorded by the Internet Broadway Database (IBDB). Her engagement was announced to run for eight weeks, through March 16, 2025.

Gilpin is known for screen roles, including GLOW. In Oh, Mary!, she stepped into the central role in Escola’s farcical reimagining of Mary Todd Lincoln.
Who replaced Cole Escola in Oh, Mary!?
Gilpin replaced Escola, who wrote the play and originated its Broadway Mary Todd Lincoln. The announcement presented the casting as a temporary handoff, not a permanent departure. Gilpin said, “I have worshiped at the altar of Cole for years, but seeing their billion layered brilliance in Oh, Mary! was a new plane of demented genius I didn’t know was scientifically possible.” Escola said, “I could not be more excited to see what Betty Gilpin does with the role of Mary.” Both statements appeared in the December 3, 2024, announcement.

When was Betty Gilpin’s last performance as Mary Todd Lincoln?
Her announced final date was March 16, 2025. IBDB’s engagement records corroborate Gilpin’s run dates, January 21 through March 16, 2025.
Did Cole Escola leave Oh, Mary! for good?
No. Escola returned to play Mary on April 8, 2025, and IBDB records their engagement through June 21, 2025. That record establishes the dates of the documented run; it does not by itself establish Escola’s status after June 21.

Oh, Mary! opened at the Lyceum Theatre on July 11, 2024. The show’s official website advertises the Broadway engagement through July 10, 2027. That booking horizon is separate from the casting schedule: a show may continue while its lead performer changes.
On August 4, 2026, the Shubert Organization announced that Bowen Yang was scheduled to begin playing Mary on September 15, 2026, for 12 weeks through December 6, 2026. Those are announced dates, not confirmation that the performances occurred as scheduled. Anyone choosing a performance for a particular performer should check the production’s current schedule and ticket availability.

The Denver Center for the Performing Arts reported on October 5, 2026, that the North American tour would return for a second year beginning in fall 2027. It also reported that a live stage film, filmed in London’s West End, was planned to debut on HBO and stream on HBO Max the following year. No exact film release date was announced in that report, so it should not be treated as currently available to stream.
