What did King Charles say about Oppenheimer?
The account comes from Nolan and Thomas speaking to reporters after the ceremony, not from a separately published statement by the King. Thomas said: “He’d seen Oppenheimer, and he liked it, so that was very gratifying to hear.” The Independent’s contemporaneous report attributed the remarks to Thomas at Buckingham Palace.
What did Nolan say the King told him?
Nolan’s reported comment was about the King knowing their work and encouraging him to continue. Speaking in a statement to the PA news agency, he said: “It was very nice that he knew our work and was aware of it, and, yes, he was hoping that I would take this as encouragement to do more of it.” That is separate from Thomas’s specific account that Charles had seen and liked Oppenheimer.
