It was a fashion homage, not a replica. Escola wore it while winning the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play for Oh, Mary!.
What Cole Escola wore to the 2025 Tony Awards
Escola collaborated with designer Wiederhoeft on a custom powder-blue gown. Vanity Fair describes Peters’s 1999 inspiration as a ballgown with medallions across the chest and a fluffy, off-the-shoulder neckline. Escola’s look also included a wig of dark auburn curls styled in a romantic updo. The reporting identifies a deliberate reference, not an exact copy or a ready-to-buy replica.

How the look honored Bernadette Peters
Peters wore the referenced gown to the 1999 Tony Awards, where she accepted the award for Best Actress in a Musical for Annie Get Your Gun. Escola’s 2025 outfit echoed that earlier look through its color, neckline, embellishment and styling, while remaining a separate, custom-designed garment.

In a post-awards video interview published June 9, Escola explained that the tribute was personal. They recalled trying to sneak into the Tony Awards Carlyle party with longtime collaborator Jeffrey Self and said they wanted to honor that younger self by dressing “à la Bernadette” and bringing an old friend. Playbill’s interview includes Escola’s explanation.

Peters responded with a joke about the chest-hair pattern, then congratulated Escola on the award: “I thought they looked absolutely lovely but when I wore it I wore my chest hairs in a different pattern,” she said, adding, “But, more importantly congratulations to Cole on the Tony!!” Vanity Fair reported the statement, which Peters gave to Playbill.

A fashion tribute on an award-winning night
Escola won the Tony for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play for Oh, Mary! at the 78th Tony Awards. The gown connected the evening to Peters’s earlier Tony appearance; the auburn updo completed the reference without making the two looks identical.
