Colonel Mustafa was the Iron Sheik, not a new wrestler. In 1991, WWE brought back Hossein Khosrow Ali Vaziri under a new name and placed him alongside Sgt. Slaughter and General Adnan in the Gulf War-era storyline. The twist was that Slaughter and the Iron Sheik had previously been bitter rivals.
Who was Colonel Mustafa?
Colonel Mustafa was the ring character used by the Iron Sheik, whose real name was Hossein Khosrow Ali Vaziri. WWE says Vaziri left the company in 1988 and returned in 1991 as Mustafa; its retrospective identifies Mustafa as Slaughter’s former nemesis, the Iron Sheik. WWE’s account of the Iron Sheik’s career confirms the rebranding and return. The official pages cited here do not establish the character’s exact first broadcast date.
Why did WWE change his name?
The Iron Sheik’s own explanation was brief. Asked in a 2016 interview why WWE brought him back as Colonel Mustafa instead of as the Iron Sheik, he replied: “DIFFERENT SITUATION DIFFERENT GIMMICK. THEY WAN’T TO TRY SOMETHING DIFFERENT. BUT EVERYBODY REMEMBERED THE SHEIK. THE LEGEND. IT DIDNT LAST LONG BUBBA.” The spelling and punctuation are reproduced as published by Tales from the Turnbuckle.
That is Vaziri’s recollection, not a documented statement of WWE’s full creative rationale. The sources establish that the new character fit the storyline then underway, but do not provide a primary WWE explanation for choosing the specific Colonel Mustafa persona.

Why was the return so strange?
It reversed the audience’s established view of the two wrestlers. WWE recounts the Iron Sheik and Sgt. Slaughter’s earlier rivalry, then describes Mustafa joining Slaughter and General Adnan. The alliance made sense within the new storyline, but it was a sharp change from their previous on-screen relationship.
The shift also replaced the familiar Iron Sheik identity with a character tailored to a particular angle. WWE’s Sgt. Slaughter biography places the alliance in the Gulf War-era story in which Slaughter turned heel and was presented as an Iraqi sympathizer. Mustafa’s fictional alignment should not be treated as evidence about Vaziri’s actual nationality or political views.

Where Colonel Mustafa fit in the storyline

The Triangle of Terror
After WrestleMania VII, Slaughter aligned with General Adnan and Colonel Mustafa. WWE called the group the Triangle of Terror. The trio later lost to Hogan and The Ultimate Warrior at SummerSlam 1991, according to WWE’s Slaughter biography.
