Australian singer and music entrepreneur Col Joye died in August 2025, aged 89, ABC News reported. Best known for early pop hits including “Bye Bye Baby,” Joye also helped the Bee Gees at the start of their recording career: he signed the group to Joye Music, and the Gibb brothers later sang backing vocals on one of his singles. Sources differ on whether Joye first met them in 1961 or 1962.
Who was Col Joye?
Col Joye was the stage name of Colin Jacobsen, an Australian singer, entertainer and music-industry entrepreneur. He began performing in Sydney in 1957 with the KJ Quintet, formed by his brother Kevin. The brothers took the name Col Joye and the Joy Boys for a Manly Jazzerama engagement, and Joye became one of Australia’s early pop chart successes.
His first record was the EP Joyride, released in 1958. The following year, “Bye Bye Baby” reached the top of the Sydney charts. APRA AMCOS also identifies three other Joy Boys number-one singles: “Oh Yeah Uh Huh,” “(Rockin’, Rollin’) Clementine” and “Yes Sir, That’s My Baby.”
How did Col Joye help the Bee Gees get started?
Accounts agree that Joye encountered the Bee Gees in Surfers Paradise early in their career, but they do not agree on the year. The National Portrait Gallery and ABC News place the encounter in 1961; the Bee Gees’ official history says Barry Gibb introduced himself to Joye and his brother Kevin in 1962. The sources therefore do not establish a single settled date.

The meeting led to a business relationship, not just an introduction. The National Portrait Gallery and ABC News say Joye signed the Bee Gees to Joye Music. Separately, APRA AMCOS says Joye started Joye Publishing and that Barry Gibb was its first signing. These are distinct music-company and publishing relationships.
The Gibb brothers also contributed musically to Joye’s career: they sang backing vocals on his 1963 single “Starlight of Love.” The Bee Gees’ official history separately says the brothers later signed a five-year contract with Festival Records; that agreement should not be confused with their connection to Joye Music.

What did Col Joye do beyond performing?
Joye’s work extended across artist management, recording, promotion and music publishing. APRA AMCOS says he and Kevin founded ATA Studios and Joye Publishing, and that Joye joined APRA in 1958. His support for songwriters included making studio time available: in an APRA AMCOS remembrance, former AMPAL general manager and former APRA/AMCOS/AMPAL board director Peter Hebbes AM said, “He always made his studio available to writers FOC, often engineering the sessions himself.”
Joye’s career also included television and concert promotion, alongside live performance. ARIA CEO Annabelle Herd described his contribution as spanning “music to TV, publishing to concert promotion, artist management and live performances” and lasting more than six decades, in a statement quoted by Rolling Stone Australia.

Joye’s significance lies both in his own recording career and in the infrastructure and relationships he helped build around Australian music. His early chart success made him a prominent performer; his studio and publishing work supported songwriters and artists, while his early connection to the Bee Gees became part of the group’s Australian beginnings.
The National Portrait Gallery says Joye donated more than 1,200 items to the National Film and Sound Archive, extending his legacy beyond recordings and performances. Normie Rowe, speaking to ABC News, remembered him as “the true gentleman of the industry.”

One biographical detail remains inconsistent: the National Portrait Gallery labels Joye “1938–2025,” while ABC News reports that he died aged 89. Those details do not align, so a birth year cannot be stated confidently from these accounts. The Gallery also reported in a 2021 biography that the Bee Gees had sold more than 120 million records worldwide; that is the Gallery’s 2021 figure, not a current independently verified total.
