Christie Brinkley said she had been asked for years to write a memoir and had started more than once, only to stop because she worried the idea was presumptuous. While clearing her art studio, she found old journals and was struck by the stories they brought back. Asked why she chose this moment, she answered, “If not now, never.”
What prompted Brinkley to write the memoir now?
In an interview published shortly before the book’s release, Brinkley described feeling nervous about whether anyone would want to read her autobiography. She had considered writing it before, but doubts about presumption made her abandon the effort. Later, discussing the decision on Today, she said that finding old journals while cleaning her art studio helped her see the stories she had lived as worth telling. Kirkus Reviews reported her concise explanation for the timing: “If not now, never.” Kirkus Reviews’ April 30, 2025 report covers that appearance.
The phrase “If Not Now, When?” comes from the title of the earlier interview. It is distinct from the later wording Brinkley used on Today.
What is Uptown Girl about?
The publisher’s description presents the memoir as Brinkley’s account of life both in front of and behind the camera. Its announced scope moves from her formative years and lifelong interest in art through modeling, marriage, motherhood, and work in entertainment.

- Her childhood and development as an artist.
- Her modeling career, including travel as a supermodel.
- Her four marriages and her relationship with Billy Joel, including life on the road with a musician husband and their baby.
- Film and sitcom appearances, horseback riding, boxing training, and Broadway.
- Dangerous experiences, including a helicopter crash and other near-fatal events.
These are the publisher’s stated subjects, not a claim that every episode is covered in equal depth. Brinkley described her aim as encouraging readers to shape their own lives: “I wrote Uptown Girl to inspire readers to create the life they want, which is what I’ve always tried to do, not through fortune or fame, but by saying yes to adventure and trying to find the magic in every moment, no matter how big or how small.” Kirkus reproduced the statement in its February 4, 2025 coverage of the announcement.
What did Brinkley say about Billy Joel?
Brinkley told Today that she spoke with Joel before writing the book. As she recounted it, he wanted her to feel free to tell her story, good and bad, and said he wanted her in his documentary. That is Brinkley’s report of their conversation, not a direct statement from Joel in the interview.

She also objected to headlines that, in her view, made their eleven-year relationship sound defined by only a few negative episodes. Kirkus quoted her saying, “The only thing that makes me sad is some of the headlines have made it look like they’ve lumped together 11 years of a relationship and only plucked out a couple of the bad things that I wrote about when, in fact, it was…a really great part of my life.” Her comment is her perspective on the relationship and its coverage; it does not establish how the memoir weighs every part of their marriage.
