On 16 May 2025, a judge at Manchester Magistrates’ Court refused Chris Brown bail and sent his case to Southwark Crown Court, saying the alleged offence was too serious to be dealt with at her court. That custody order did not remain in force: Brown later pleaded guilty to affray and was bailed pending sentencing, scheduled for 26 October 2026.

Why was Chris Brown remanded in custody?

At a hearing on 16 May 2025, District Judge Joanne Hirst refused Brown’s bail application and sent the case to Southwark Crown Court. The Guardian reported that Hirst considered the alleged offence “too serious” to be dealt with at the magistrates’ court. The transfer was about the seriousness of the charge and the court’s ability to deal with it; it was not a finding at that hearing that Brown was guilty. The Guardian’s contemporaneous report describes the decision.

What was the case about?

The Crown Prosecution Service said the incident took place at Tape London in the early hours of 19 February 2023. In its account, Brown struck a man with a glass bottle and co-defendant Omololu Akinlolu joined the assault; the victim went to hospital with head and knee injuries. These are details from the CPS account of the incident, not separate findings established by the later pleas. The CPS announcement also records its statement that violence of this kind is unacceptable and that it would pursue the case with police and criminal justice partners.

What changed after the 2025 hearing?

On 24 July 2026, Brown and Akinlolu pleaded guilty to affray at Southwark Crown Court. Following the pleas, Brown was granted bail pending sentence. ITV reported that he was permitted to leave the UK but had to return on 25 October, the day before sentencing. ITV’s report on the plea and bail decision gives those conditions.

Is Chris Brown still in custody, and when is sentencing?

No: the 16 May 2025 remand is not his current status. As of 8 October 2026, Brown had been bailed pending sentencing, which the CPS scheduled for 26 October 2026. The sentence had not yet taken place as of that date. The CPS announcement gives the sentencing date.
