In the account, Joel answered, “Yeah, fine, go.” Brinkley described the exchange in the second installment of Billy Joel: And So It Goes, according to Parade’s July 25, 2025 report. The sources do not give the argument’s exact date or establish that it alone caused their divorce.
What Brinkley said in the argument
Parade reported that Brinkley recounted the confrontation in the documentary. She said that after a period of mounting strain, she told Joel she could no longer take the situation and would leave with Alexa for New York. Parade quoted her words as: “I really can’t take this anymore, and I’m just gonna take Alexa back up to New York and leave.” Joel’s reported reply was: “Yeah, fine, go.” Parade’s report is the source for this exchange; an independent transcript of the documentary was not reviewed.
The report does not establish when the argument took place. It describes Joel’s drinking and time away from the family during the two-year River of Dreams tour as context for the strain, not as proof that this single confrontation caused the divorce.
Why the argument was part of a longer breakdown
Brinkley’s comments in 1994 described the marriage as deteriorating over time. In a report published that September, Deseret News quoted her saying, “The last two years, it had pretty much disintegrated,” and, “There comes a point where you realize you can’t change a person if they don’t want to change.” She also said she would marry Joel again because she had followed her heart, while acknowledging that “the negatives eventually outweighed the positives.” Deseret News’ 1994 report presents her contemporaneous account of a longer decline, rather than attributing the marriage’s end to one argument.

Marriage and divorce chronology
The Los Angeles Times reports that Brinkley and Joel married on March 23, 1985, and that Brinkley filed divorce papers in 1994, after 11 years together. Its coverage also discusses Brinkley’s memoir, Uptown Girl: A Memoir, including her recollections of drinking-related episodes and the effort to protect the family. Those are memoir-based recollections and should be understood as Brinkley’s account. The Los Angeles Times’ account provides the chronology and memoir context.
Brinkley said in her 1994 remarks that she and Joel remained on good terms because they shared daughter Alexa Ray. The Associated Press described Uptown Girl as covering Brinkley’s marriage to Joel as part of a broader memoir about her life. The AP’s announcement gives the book’s wider scope; the memoir is a separate perspective from the documentary recollection.
