Christie Brinkley says Billy Joel encouraged her to write honestly about her life in Uptown Girl. As Newser reported from Brinkley’s interview with Today, Joel’s response was: “Just say what you need to say.” That brief remark suggests support for her candor, not a sweeping endorsement of every passage in the book.

What Billy Joel reportedly told Christie Brinkley

Brinkley said Joel gave her permission to write candidly while she was working on her memoir. Newser relayed the exchange from Brinkley’s Today interview, quoting Joel as saying, “Just say what you need to say.” Newser’s account is the source for the quote; the original interview transcript was not independently available in the reporting cited here.

Brinkley also described writing about Joel as difficult because she cares about their friendship. The reported comment is therefore best understood as an encouragement to tell her story, rather than proof that Joel approved every detail or interpretation in the memoir.

What Uptown Girl is about

Uptown Girl: A Memoir is Brinkley’s account of a life that extends well beyond her marriage to Joel. The Associated Press described the book as covering her modeling and acting career, marriages, life on the road with her rock-star husband and their child, and other adventures. It was published by Harper Influence, a HarperCollins imprint. The Associated Press reported its planned publication date as April 29, 2025; the Los Angeles Times also identified Harper Influence as publisher. Los Angeles Times

The title refers to Joel’s 1983 song “Uptown Girl,” whose music video featured Brinkley. The Associated Press noted that Joel had cited Brinkley and Elle Macpherson as inspirations, so it would be inaccurate to say the song was written exclusively about Brinkley. Associated Press

How Brinkley recounts the marriage

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times published alongside the memoir’s release, Brinkley said she hesitated to include a particularly difficult scene because she cared about Joel and their friendship. She explained her motivation this way: “I loved him and I wanted to make it work.” Her account describes fear that alcohol changed the person she loved, alongside her wish to preserve the relationship. These passages are Brinkley’s recollections, not independently established findings about Joel. The San Francisco Chronicle likewise quoted memoir passages in which Brinkley described drinking as a central strain in the marriage. On tabloid rumors of affairs, the Chronicle reported that Brinkley said she believed Joel’s denials; she did not present those rumors as confirmed. San Francisco Chronicle

Why the reaction matters—and what it does not establish

Joel’s reported “say what you need to say” response offers a concise answer to whether Brinkley says he supported her writing about their history: she says he encouraged her to speak freely. It does not establish that he endorsed the book’s specific account of their marriage. Brinkley’s own explanation makes clear that writing about someone she still valued was emotionally difficult, while the memoir’s scope includes her wider career and life as well.
