Michael J. Fox made a surprise appearance during Coldplay’s Glastonbury headline set on Saturday, 29 June 2024, playing guitar on the Pyramid Stage. He joined the band for “Fix You”; Guitar World also reports that he appeared during “Humankind.” Chris Martin connected the moment to Back to the Future, saying the film helped inspire Coldplay to form.
What happened at Coldplay’s Glastonbury set?
Coldplay headlined the Pyramid Stage on Saturday, 29 June 2024. Fox appeared as a surprise guest and played electric guitar from his wheelchair during “Fix You.” Guitar World additionally places him in “Humankind” and describes his instrument as a Fender Stratocaster; its report does not identify a precise model or finish.
ABC News reported that the appearance came during Coldplay’s fifth Glastonbury headline set, following performances in 2002, 2005, 2011 and 2016. The outlet described a crowd of about 100,000, an approximate figure rather than an exact attendance count.
Why did Coldplay invite Michael J. Fox?
Fox’s appearance referenced his role as Marty McFly in Back to the Future, whose guitar-playing scenes helped inspire the band. Guitar World transcribed Martin thanking Fox onstage: “Especially thank you to the main reason why we’re in a band, is because of watching Back to the Future,” followed by, “So thank you to our hero forever, and one of the most amazing people on Earth, Mr. Michael J. Fox. Thank you so much, our hero.”
