Bob Mackie was a defining collaborator, but not every outfit from the decade can be credited to him. This is an editorial selection of 31 looks, not an archive-certified ranking; the documented examples below show how to identify them without confusing later Cher costumes for 1970s fashion.
What made Cher’s 1970s looks distinctive?
Cher’s wardrobe in the decade belonged to a high-output variety-show and performance world. The clothes were more than glamorous decoration. The V&A describes costume as a way performers such as Cher, Tina Turner and Diana Ross constructed public identity and independence. Photographs and captions from the period show a range of settings: television performances, special programs, public appearances and album art. For a 31-image gallery, each look should be identified by its own image and caption—year, setting, garment, and designer credit—rather than assuming every elaborate outfit is a Mackie design.

Documented 1970s looks and appearances
These dated examples provide reliable anchors for a wider selection. They are not a complete checklist of 31 outfits, and some archive items are design sketches rather than costumes known to have been worn.

What was Cher’s 1974 Met Ball dress made of?
Cher recalled that the dress was made from “souffle,” a material she said was available in France. In her 2019 Vogue interview, she described Bob Mackie spraying the material so it adhered to her skin. “If you look at it, it looks like it’s stuck to me,” she said. Her account explains the clinging, skin-like illusion; it does not justify substituting a more specific technical textile name for the word used in the interview. Vogue: Life in Looks

Describe it as a sheer, beaded illusion dress with feather trim, rather than a bodysuit. Cher connected it both to the 1974 Met Ball and to the Time cover, making the garment a particularly well-documented example of her 1970s public image.
Which Cher outfits were designed by Bob Mackie?
There is strong documentation for specific Mackie-Cher looks, including the January 1973 television gown and headdress, the March 1975 satin dress and feather overcoat, and the 1979 Take Me Home cover. CBS captions attach Mackie’s name to those examples. The credit should be checked image by image: the decade’s elaborate style does not prove that a particular garment was his design.

The partnership was important to Cher, who said in a Billboard interview reproduced in Mackie’s official press archive, “Bob changed my entire life!” Bob Mackie press archive Their collaborations made costume a central part of how she appeared on television and in performance, but the available captions do not establish a definitive designer credit for every outfit in a 31-look selection.
How to tell the 1970s looks from Cher’s later costumes
Some of Cher’s best-known costumes belong to later decades, not this gallery. The 1986 Oscars Mohawk costume and the body stocking worn in the “If I Could Turn Back Time” video are useful reference points, but neither is a 1970s look. That distinction matters especially for the 1974 Met Ball dress: it was a beaded illusion gown with feather trim, not a bodysuit or body stocking. A gallery that uses “bodysuit” in its headline should not apply the term indiscriminately to a sheer gown.

- Date and setting: year, program, performance, event or album image, as established by a caption or other record.
- Garment and visual details: identify the silhouette and visible features such as beading, satin, feathers or a headdress; avoid claiming unseen construction details.
- Designer credit: name Mackie only where a reliable source attaches him to that particular look.
- Context: explain in one sentence what the costume did for its original setting—such as creating a theatrical television entrance or distinguishing a performance number.
CBS’s archive spans multiple decades, so its captions—not the gallery as a whole—are the key to determining whether an image belongs in a 1970s selection. Cher’s own account adds valuable context to the 1974 dress, while the exhibition and museum records help situate the broader collaboration.
