Chappell Roan yelled back after an off-screen person was heard saying “shut the f— up” as she prepared to pose on the black carpet at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards. Roan later said the crowded, loud setting felt overwhelming and that she has anxiety around people yelling. Reports do not establish who made the remark or why.
What happened on the VMAs black carpet?
The exchange took place on September 11, 2024, during arrivals outside UBS Arena in Long Island, New York. As Roan was preparing to pose, an off-screen voice said, “shut the f— up.” She turned and replied with the same profane phrase, then added, “No, not me, b—.” The Los Angeles Times reported the incident and noted that it was unclear why the off-screen remark was made.
Although coverage has described the exchange as involving a photographer, the available reporting does not establish that the speaker addressed Roan directly or intended to insult her. The first remark is heard off-screen, and its context is uncertain.
Why did Chappell Roan yell back?
In an Entertainment Tonight interview on the carpet, Roan described the atmosphere as frightening and overwhelming. As printed by the Los Angeles Times, she said: “I think for someone who gets a lot of anxiety around people yelling at you, the carpet is horrifying and I yelled back. You don’t get to yell at me like that.” The San Francisco Chronicle and The Independent also reported her explanation.

How does the exchange connect to Roan’s comments about boundaries?
The incident came after Roan had spoken publicly in August 2024 about unwanted attention from fans. In a statement quoted by the Los Angeles Times, she wrote: “I do not agree with the notion that I owe a mutual exchange of energy, time, or attention to people I do not know, do not trust, or who creep me out — just because they’re expressing admiration.” She also said, “Women do not owe you a reason why they don’t want to be touched or talked to.”
Those comments help explain why the carpet moment was understood in the context of personal boundaries. They do not, however, establish the off-screen speaker’s identity, intended target, or motive.
